Dr. Hagen was my favorite. Everyone should take at least one of his classes. My only regret is that I only took one class from him- I should have taken all of his classes. I learned more in Dr. Hagen's class than in any other class. He also has a great sense of humor, which adds to his interesting/informative lectures. His classes were always fun

He is quite possibly the worst professor that I've had so far. His lectures are absolutely useless, he assigns way too much reading (1200+ pages), the essay topics are way too broad to cover within the page limit he sets and you get marked down if you can't manage to do it. Try to stay far away from this professor-- he's absolutely horrible!

Comment:
His lectures were somewhat boring, but he gave a lecture outline at the beginning of class. There was a lot of reading and 4 essays, but no midterms. Class material is useless except a limited amount for the final. Overall, if you can write a decent essay on books, this class is an easy A without going to lecture. Might be boring but worth it.

Lectures are ridiculously boring. There was about 200 people in the class and after mid way about 40 to 50 came to lecture-no joke I counted every time. 4 Essays on 8 books they are interesting but a lot of reading-GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Thats how you do well on the papers and learn anything in class. Overall, most boring teacher ever.

Went to his office hours and he was horribly rude and confrontational - kept me waiting for 30 min then made it seem like I was the one being rude. Almost had me in tears.

Prof Hagen is a very good professor when it comes to upper division. He is very knowledgeable in his field and the amount of information he has is great. There is a lot of reading and the essays can be hard, but if you try your hardest (that means not writing the night before) and talk to him you should be fine. He is nice and can be funny.

Hagen is very brilliant, and once you actually make the effort to pay attention to lectures, the class is interesting. Essays were a struggle for me at the beginning but once I got the hang of what he wanted out of answers, they proved interesting and extremely relevant. Book choice was good. There is potential to learn a lot from Hagen.

Very Intelligent, knows his stuff, he presents alot of information. Great format for the class. Paper topics are vague and are graded harshly. Hard to get an A but he's an expert in his area.

hagen is not a very good lecturer, tends to talk on and on and never finishes up his topics. however, all the readings were very interesting (although too many books to buy), some of the best books i have read thus far, essays were fairly easy, class really depends on ta you get, overall.. a sleeper

WORST LECTURER EVER. I gave up completely after trying to go a few times, but I kept up with the readings and went to discussion every time, and got an A-. The books and essays are really very easy.. but it was only thanks to my great TA that I learned anything at all. DO NOT TAKE THIS.

Lectures are slow, like everyone has said, but if you pay attention and get used to his style, they are quite interesting; Lots of reading though...but interesting nonetheless. Essays are easy once you know the formula to write em.

I LOVED THIS CLASS! i didn't think lectures were bad at all. he's great at telling stories. papers topics were long and sometimes unclear, but once you figured out what he wanted they were easy. it was a little rushed, but covering all of world history from 1800 in 10 weeks is challenging anyway.

Too many books...essays do not relate to the literature, the literature does not relate to the class. Lectures put me to sleep, TA's uninformed. Books are impossible to find. This is the worst class I've ever taken. PLEASE don't take it! I wish I'd listened.

My only qualm about this class was that lectures were excruciating. Although he is a brilliant man who has written a lot of well-received, insightful literature, it does not make up for his teaching style. Books & essays are a sinch; textbook is referenc

I can't believe I made it to all his lectures. TERRIBLE lecturer. Never finishes topics for the day. Book is useless if you write notes. WAY too much reading of novels. But the class was a breeze, but it was like pulling teeth everytime I went to class.
