What kind of course is this? Does not even teach anything, or why some things are done. All he does is talk about pictures in his textbook. If you want to learn completely by yourself, take this course. If not, stay away

Didn't exactly teach. Mostly just gave handouts and had to rely on textbook. Even with the textbook, it was a difficult course. Mostly learning from other students and on your own.

I think this has to do more with the course then the prof. There was a lot of material to cover, so the prof had to go quickly over the topics. Most of the time it involved introducing some concept, some equations that were magically pulled from thin air. Don't get me wrong. VERY interesting course, but it was also difficult one this year.

Collins is a genius in his field, one of the most respected professors in my year. Great prof. The only (minor) issue with Collins is the fact that he finds all the material so easy (understandable considering he invented some of the equations he teaches) that he's not afraid to move on to a new topic when students are still lost on the last one.

Had a tendency to race through the material (especially important material!) and seemed rather unapproachable. He had little to no office hours. However, his exam is almost identical from year to year - solving these would ensure a high mark on the final, given that you could sift through his scattered notes and random numbers during the course.

Although Professor Collins is a highly educated and intelligent individual, his ability to convey his knowledge to the class is lacking. Rely mostly on the textbook to learn anything, and even then it won't necessarily get you through the assignments. It seems some amount of magical knowledge of something things is needed to pass this class.

Very confusing professor. I don't mind his condescending nature and he is usually joking. He is not good at teaching the material though and is very difficult to follow. He makes somewhat difficult subject matter even harder to understand. I don't understand how he has awards and nominations for lecturing, because I expect much more from my profs.

This is a very difficult course. Prof Collins is a nice guy and his historical anecdotes are very interesting. However his teaching style seems a little dated. He is very arrogant and condescending at times. He believes his teaching and board notes are so good that there's no need for a textbook. As a CIV102 student: WE NEED A TEXTBOOK for ref. !

I hated the subject with a passion, but liked the way he taught. The mini history lessons he gave kept my interest, and his interactions with certain members of the class were nothing short of hilarious. Word of advice to future CIV102 students - do not attempt to show this man how smart you (think you) are. He'll tear you to bits.

Overall, not a good prof. Very arrogant and conceited, has taught the course too many years in a row to tell whether the students understand him or not. I know he is very smart and probably a good guy at heart, but be serious, people, this guy is really overrated.

Excellent professor. As much as I hate civil engineering, his lectures are actually so interesting I never skip them. Prof. Collins is a walking encyclopedia and an excellent lecturer. Whether you like his subject or not, I'm sure you'll enjoy his lectures.

He knew a lot about civil engineering. He had a lot of experience and exposure in the field. I hated him however cause I do not like civil engineering at all. He went way too fast, I didn't understand anything that was going on. I went to every lecture. 95% of the class loved him, however I hated him...i will never go in civil engineering e

An amazing professor overall, and an integral part of the first-year EngSci experience. Provides interesting historical anecdotes to accompany his concise, clear lectures. His style is very much chalk and talk (although with questions), which may not be to everyone's taste. There is no textbook, just a notebook you fill in and can take to the exam.
