Comment:
Dr. Schertzer was one of the sections for Microbio Lab which is solely created by Dr. Davies. I think Dr. Davies' section is a better option. The syllabus said there would be quizzes. Schertzer did not give quizzes, so grades were midterm (multiple choice/written), lab practical final(cumulative), and post lab questions. Become close with your TA!

Professor Schertzer is one of the best STEM professors I've had as a biology major at Bing. He is very approachable and always willing to help students when they are confused or have any questions about class material. Microbio lab with Schertzer was one of the lowest stress environment classes I have been in. Study a lot for the 2 lab exams

Take Dr. Schertzer for microbiology lab if you can!!! He didn't give pop quizzes like the other professor did. He made the environment super relaxed and was always happy and eager to answer questions. He is so easy to talk to, and makes an effort to get to know every student. I wish I could take another class with him.

Avoid Dr. Schertzer for Biochem Lab if you can. He screwed us during finals week. You will have no idea what the exam is going to be on. He's probably the most unnecessarily strict professor I've ever had. He's the kind that is strict not because it will help you learn more, but the kind that just wants to make your life harder.

Comment:
This professor is extremely disorganized and unprofessional. He sent me the critiques of my first presentation for Pathogenesis seminar the NIGHT BEFORE my presentation at 10 pm. He also has no real syllabus to go off of and has no course schedule available to go off of. He also grades extremely unreasonably and isnt nice about it.

Extremely monotone and uninterested in lecture. Did not explain difficult concepts well. Exams were very difficult even after studying for days. Do not recommend unless you want to be miserable.

Worst professor I ever had. He showed 0 enthusiasm during lecture and barely made any accommodations for this online semester. He rushed through the same amount of material he normally would during a regular semester and made us finish before Thanksgiving, even though there were still about two weeks left in the semester. don't put yourself thru it

Dr. Schertzer can seem unenthusiastic at times, but he's really an excellent teacher. I never felt lost during his lectures. Tests were easy compared to the overall difficulty of the content.

His half of the course has a ridiculous amount of material and he asks super specific questions. He just breezes through everything so it's hard to get much out of lecture. You're better off just reading the textbook and watching AK Lectures. Very frustrating when he used discussion periods as extra lectures so we wouldn't be behind on material.

Schertzer teaches Biochem at Bing with Dr. Callahan. He blows through powerpoints very quickly and asks very specific questions on exams about small details. You need to attend class to know what material from the book is important, but you can't rely on lecture slides alone. Take notes on what he says. Overall, disappointed with his half of BCHEM.

I thought that Dr. Schertzer was a great professor. People tend to think otherwise but you have to keep in mind that he is teaching the more difficult half of the class and is teaching it what most schools teach in two semesters in one. If you go to class and read the book you will do fine. Tests are very fair. Most questions are just regurgitation

He is alright. The material he teaches is super dense and its up to you to keep up with it. there are times where he just blows by the material and its your job to understand it. Metabolism is very interesting and I recommend using AK lectures to help your studying.

He seems like a good guy, but is not a good professor. He blows through lectures quickly and it is easy to miss important information. He will go into detail on the smallest topics on tests. He answers questions cryptically, and is not clear about what topics will be on exams. He gave us time to ask about the final, but dodged every question. :(

He's okay, but the material is inherently hard, so it's really up to you to fill in the gaps. The textbook is great, so read that and take notes. Tests are hard, but look at past tests, he often reuses questions or even whole tests. Tests are everything, so study far ahead, frequently, in bite sized pieces, not one huge session the weekend before.

As a teacher he is meh, but I have more of an issue with the class itself being graded in such a way as to make it difficult to get a good grade. Most schools do this class in two parts but in Bing its compacted into one so somethings are missing. In our class, DNA/RNA processes were not even touched so when it comes to MCAT studying u are sol

Dr. Schertzer teaches everything from glycolysis to amino acid metabolism. There is an incredible amount of material in this course, but the exams were doable. He might speak quickly, however, that is the nature of the course and not his fault. He was very receptive to questions and definitely seemed to care that everyone understood the material.

Warning: people you sit with during the first lab are your partners for the rest of the semester. Write-ups, except for the last, are group projects and end up being 20+ pgs. TA grades hard. Go to every discussion section prepared for a tough quiz. If you fail you'll have to retake during lab, and you won't know the new grade. This class was hard.
