John is incredibly knowledgeable, and his lengthy lectures can sometimes be intimidating. However, he often covers topics multiple times and will be happy to clarify anything. He also gets to know his students and gives great advice. I feel lucky to have taken his class early on in college, I will be taking his classes again in the future.

He is a professional of East Asian studies, and knows everything about what's happening there. As long as you pay attention to what he is taking, write papers, and prepare for the exams, you should be fine.

The class I took is an FYI class. It acted as both a normal class and a college adjustment class. He was passionate about the material which made a good class, but it came at the cost of the college adjustment part of the program.

I had him for my FYI and he was not very good at his time management skills. I think this could in part be because if the FYI program, but he tends to ramble.

He's enthusiastic and knows his stuff but he definately is too tough on incoming freshman. He gets too ahead of himself and expected a lot of our FYI.

He's a dry lecturer. Show up, take notes, write a paper, do the test. I didn't read a book in his class and still got an A. All you have to do is pay attention. He's very intelligent and kind, but has no memory, often forgetting names and appointments. Pay attention and you'll learn much.

Excellent professor. He knows exactly what he wants and tells it to you so clearly that even a baby can understand. At the same time, John accepts no BS so you should be prepared for class and he will catch you if you are bsing. I have had a number of his classes and no complaints.

Really awful professor. He knows what he is talking about, but should not be teaching intro courses. He goes off on tangents that are unrelated to the topic of discussion, which are hard to follow. Also, he is biased when grading papers. I'm sure he is a fine professor for upper level courses, but not for intro level ones.

As a freshman, I hated John's classes. By senior year, I loved them. As a current grad student, I miss them! Yes, he rambles on and on, but he is so knowledgeable and obviously really loves his field and teaching. If you aren't enthusiastic about the subject, he would probably not be a good prof. You have to work hard.

Excellent teacher. He knows what he's talking about, and does a good job of including people in class discussion without making them feel stupid. Tests are fair and reasonable. I would take another class of his in a heartbeat.

I don't think John should be teaching intro classes. He's too smart and enthusiastic. He should be focusing on upper level classes where he can go off on his tangents and the class will understand them. Intro is where you learn the jargon so you can understand the tangents later. Tests were tough but doable. He's hard to follow, unclear sometimes.

He really made me understand the political structures of East Asia. When I visited as a prospective, he told me my "plastics" were the Kuril island dispute. I still am working to make sure he's right.

This man is awesome. At first it seems like it's a lot of work, but you somehow magically get more done in his class. Can't really **** that much with papers because he knows his stuff, but it's still a joy to right a paper in his class. He could probably talk about golf and keep you interested, he's that good of an orator and teacher. Intimidating to approach at first but once you get to know him he's an incredible guy to talk to. A must have teacher, everyone at Beloit should have him.

I don't think I've met anyone who loves political science as much as John. The wealth of information in his head is just absolutely amazing. Everyone should take at least one class with John.
