This man is the most animated and excited professor ever. Without a doubt that only professor that could make a misogynist such as myself interested in feminist literature. If you do the work and show some effort, it's an easy A and the best semester of English ever.

The coolest guy ever. Ever. Teachers like him are the reason why there is still a future for education in this country. Take him, even if you have to build your schedule around his class. I will probably never respect a person more in my entire life.

This was the most amazing class ever, and Mr. Burns is the most amazing instructor ever! He gets so excited and involved in class-you can tell he loves what he's doing. You always feel free to express your ideas-he creates a very comfortable, laid-back classroom atmosphere. The quizzes & final were easy if you paid attention in class and read some.

This man was great. Take anything you can that he teaches. He expects you to work some, but hey, that's college. I still go into his office and talk to him because I genuinely miss him.

Professor Burns was a great teacher who was truly interested in our class and the material. Class participation is extremely important, even more so than actually reading. You won't mind coming to class, though, because it was really interesting.

Professor Burns is obviously very passionate about the Harlem Renaissance. He is a very animated teacher, but his teaching style annoyed some students who would have rathered that he teach in a more conventional lecture format. Class participation is mandatory. He's a VERY easy grader and does not delve very deeply into papers and essays.

Burns is the best teacher at USC & Motown is the best class at USC.You're a fool if you're in the Honors College & don't take this class. I was depressed when I missed class it was so much fun. You'll learn so much about music & pop culture & you get to talk about movies, TV shows, & bands. I can't imagine there's a better class anywhere in America

don't leave USC without taking a class taught by burns. Amazing man, passionate about literature and the Harlem Renaissance. A rather ambitious reading list, an anthology and 5 novels, all of which were very good. class discussion was my favorite and burns wasn't afriad to tackle some of the "racier" images. You're missing out if you don't take him

Burns is a great guy, very helpful and always willing to talk with you or help you out with a paper. There is a lot of reading, but only 5 papers throughout the semester, followed by a 10-20 page research paper (it sucks). They are graded easily though.

He is the only professor I would ever take a class earlier than 11am for. Motown was great interesting and I actually was dissapointed when I missed class. Burns is great, animated and entertaining. He is big on class participation and while there is some reading I found it interesting and relevant.

What can I say? Mr. Burns is the man. If you even remotely like Motown music, this class will be awesome and you should take it. Sometimes there is a decent amount of reading but you never really feel overwhelmed. Great class and a sensational professor.

I'm with all of the other people who have responded in that Burns is definitely interesting and fun, but the class wasn't my favorite. I felt at times that it was less a discussion and more a pressure to say something intelligent, which I hated. Plus, the harlem renaissance is great and all, but there's only so much of it you can take.

If you are even SLIGHTLY interested in English, African-American History, Harlem Renaissance lit., music, etc... do yourself a favor & TAKE ENGL 287 w/Prof. Burns... this is by FAR one of the best English classes I have EVEN taken. Any teacher who can list 7 books on the syllabus and still have students fighting for spots is definitely WORTH IT!

Lots and lots of reading, but it's well worth it. Mr. Burns is the most lively and interesting professor I've had, and he's very concerned about how you're doing and what your opinions are. Whether you're interested in the topic or not, I recommend any of his classes.
