I was a graduate student at UCSD from 1974-1979. I took John's Thermo class my first year. He was an inspiration, very bright man. Walked briskly through campus with his coffee cub dangling from a string tripod - good physics 1 example. A great experience that I will never forget... still these so many years later.

It is unfortunate, but Prof. Wheeler knows his material but can't explain it. Office hourse are mandatory unless you are omniscient or content with failing. Don't worry if you don't get the material, 95% of the class won't either, but after all is said and done you will have learned a great deal from this class.

He's hard yet very helpful, its hard to hate the old guy. All you have to do is study hard and do the homework and practice tests. Expect to get about 40% on the tests (a B in the class). Just study hard and give up ur friday nights for pchem.

Lectures are useless unless you completely understand the graduate level book he teaches from before showing up. Tests are absurdly hard with averages in the 40's. If professor Wheeler could relate this material to students it would be one thing, but while he is intellegent he is terrible at teaching and expects complete mastery for an A. Good luck

Very smart prof. His class is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. He means well and he is very passionate about the material, but this is a very hard series. But what choice do you have he is the only one teaching it, misery loves company

I survived a whole year of Dr. Wheeler's classes, and I even got an A in one of them (I do not look like Jesus btw). He really doesn't understand why the material he teaches is hard to students. He really thinks students need to know what he knows.

You can always tell who has taken the Chem 131 series with Wheeler and who hasn't. Those that survive this grueling series/professor get what's known as the 'thousand yard stare...' It's like they've seen death and no other class can phase them. Yeah, I've been through that class, and I know people who didn't make it too. May god have mercy...

Very HARD professor, he's probably a great person outside of class but god knows why he's trying to teach general chem when he's a freakin p-chem professor, lectures are useless & exams are incredibly hard, even some of the TA's couldn't do some of the problems (same with the OASIS leader)

I believe this Chem Teachers goal in life is to reduce the amount of chemists in the world, one class at a time. Spent over 150 hours preparing for his final in 132, got a C. 12 hours on Chem 120B got A-. Chemistry Majors, since he is the only one right now that teaches 131/132, i recommend either changing your major or changing Universities.

You think lower div 6b is hard with him? Try p. chem. The only one to make it out with an A was a guy who looked like Jesus. So only the son of god can get by in this class. And he didn't even get 100! and god knows everything!! Sooo... you're pretty screwed. Bring the lube cuz ur gonna need it.

DO NOT TAKE, IF NEEDED, THEN WAIT UNTIL NEXT QUARTER OR TAKE DURING SUMMER OR SOMETHING! NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE. TESTS ARE HARD. HE RELATES EVERYTHING TO PHYISICAL CHEMISTRY, HIS SPECIALTY, SO DO NOT TAKE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS AND WILL SAVE URSELF FROM A QUARTER OF FIRE AND BRIMSTONES!!

This one time, like 8 months ago, I saw this complicated book on black holes, and that was the most confusing thing I had ever seen until I took Professor Wheeler's chemistry class. Dropped it, and never took him again.

Comment:
The title of this class should be CHEM 6B: Intoduction to Failing and Frustration with an Emphasis on Crying During Tests. His tests look absolutly nothing like the homework or practice midterms. He introduces concepts and notation not found in the book in his lectures, which are very very difficult to follow. I strongly recommend another teacher.
