Worst Learning experience ever. The bad news is that he's pretty useless, he doesn't explain concepts well, and the tests are hardly like the homework. The good news is that the final was pretty easy and the TAs in the math lab are helpful. Any other option available, take it!

Worst learning experience I have ever had no clarity in the teaching extremely terrible avoid at all cost I would even postpone taking the class if he is the only professor left. Good guy, knows his stuff but should not be trying to teach it.

He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He mumbles to himself at the front of the class and his handwriting is completely illegible. I stopped going to class was doing just as well as I was when I went because I had to teach myself anyways. Don't take a class from him, he's a sweet man, he just has very little teaching ability.

He is honestly the worst teacher I have ever had. I had to learn all the lessons from the book because he taught so ineffectively. He makes you feel dumb for asking questions. Don't take his class

Someone advised me to not take his class and I will say that it is my biggest regret, not listening to that person. As stated from others, he mumbles, speaks into the board softly, and can't read his handwriting. He knows a lot but he doesn't teach well at all, worst teacher I have ever had.

I started attending Dr. Tolman's lecture, but I (and the whole class) had a hard time understanding him. illegible handwriting, and hard to understand. I do well in math, but i didnt get much out of the lecture. at all. I ended up switching to Dr. Bakker's section, and he is MUCH better! Dr. T understands the material, but cant teach it well.

He is a very spiritual and nice guy, but his teaching skills are really lacking. His handwriting is illegible and he likes to do proofs instead of examples. If you talk to him one on one he is a little more helpful, but he doesn't really prepare you for the tests. Good guy though.

Our class always had a higher average on the tests than any other class, so he must have been doing something right. He is very intelligent, but sometimes I don't want to hear the theory of the math, just how to do it.

I'm honestly surprised to see such low ratings of Professor Tolman. Everyone in my class seemed to enjoy the class. Tolman has an interesting and enjoyable way of tying the Gospel into the lessons. Great class. One of the best math classes I've ever taken.

A good professor. Very open to questions, seems genuinely interested in the students. He also manages to tie the gospel into math in a good way.

This is THE worst professor at BYU! He is very unapproachable. He never admits he was wrong. He tests on things he doesn't teach. He doesn't go over what will be on his tests. The class overall wasn't too hard, but he doesn't help out at all.

Definitely worst teacher ever. Demeaning, senile, boring, depressing, grades everything very ARBITRARILY. This class SUCKS. Just shoot yourself in the leg rather than taking Tolman's class and save yourself a lot of grief. I don't wish this class upon ANYONE!

He writes completely illegibly, doesn't care if you learn, says things are "magic" if he doesn't feel like explaining, makes fun of questions he doesn't like, and was unhelpful even during his office hours. I would never take another class from him. I heard Doud is good for 343.

His lectures are very confusing, just does proofs with v,w, and u. Plus you can't read his hadwriting so they all look like the same letter. Try not to take math from him.

Comment:
Hardest teacher here at BYU. Does not care if you know how to solve diffeq's...only if you know his theories. Tests are extremely abstract. Do not take this class unless you are a math major with a love for number theories. He believes that you should always figure the material out on your own (No ta's), and is therefore very unhelpful.

Comment:
Only math majors and those who love spending hours doing math problems should take this class from him. He speaks very clearly and explains the theory very well, but doesn't really listen to student's questions. Some of the test problems will take an hour. One of the tests took 5 hours to complete. He doesn't believe in computers or calculators.
