Comment:
Overall one of the best professor experiences I've had so far. Not many people are that interested in organic chemistry, but Thummel made it interesting by cracking actually funny jokes and relating the topics to real world issues. He was also interested in student success and gave non-mandatory help sessions after class. All around Great dude.

Incredible professor, routinely gives help sessions to work through problems after class. Lectures are well organized and exams are built from the material covered in class as well as recommended practice problems assigned. Grade is three exams, if you show up to class, pay attention, and work all of the practice problems this class is not bad.

Thummel has a habit of rushing through the important things and doesn't seem to realize that very few people are understanding the things he is saying. He only goes over subjects once so you have to go back and reteach it to yourself with the textbook. And forget what people say about ochem, you have to MEMORIZE all the reactions.

Find his old exams! Although his 3rd exam is nothing like his previous exams. He gave 15 points extra credit on 3rd exam. You must read the book. Final is not as hard as I thought. Lectures are long and boring. He curves slightly. Curve is based on attendance. 100 points exam+100 points exam+200 points final exam 400 points total for the class.

Decent professor and straightforward teaching. You'll probably end up reading the book to clarify/learn what you didn't get. His tests are generally easier than other professors and if you practice past exams/suggested problems beforehand you should be fine.

His lectures are SUPER boring. He is hard to hear during most lectures- probably because he's getting really old. If you don't read before lectures and have no background knowledge of what he will teach that day, it is useless to come to class. My best advice is take a workshop with this class and do all of his old tests- they are very similar.

He's an old-fashioned professor. Don't expect this to be like Chem I & II where slides are spoon-fed to you. If you attend class, do the problems, and read the parts you didn't understand from lecture in the textbook, you'll be fine. His classes are not boring at all. Funny and smart guy.

Teaching style is pretty standard stuff but he tends to rush through things rather than take the time to make sure everyone understands the material. Textbook is a must, work out problems and study to 'understand' not to memorize.

Tests are extremely easy as long as you diligently study and keep up. I didn't go to class and made an A. STUDY THE ACS BOOK. It may seem daunting because Thummel does not stress many of the topics in there like acid/base strengths, but if you go through the book at least once, you'll be fine!

Awesome OrgoII professor! I really enjoyed the enthusiasm that he brings to lectures. OrgoII is not a cake walk, but his lectures are easy to keep up with. Attendance is not mandatory but he will give random pop quizzes that don't count as a grade, but will be factored in at the end of the semester to see if you attended. Would highly recommend!

If you show up to class and learn the important reactions, you'll be fine. Use old exams and study for the ACS part ahead of time - you HAVE to buy the study guide to do well on the ACS portion. He's not the greatest prof for orgo but he makes it a lot easier than other profs do. Quizzes aren't part of your grade either.

If you read the book, you will make an A. I really don't think that you have to go to his class because he just reiterates what's in the book. It's only helpful if you are the edge of getting an A/B, B/C etc. He will look at your quizzes to make sure that you actually came to class. Easy!

His exams are pretty straightforward and it should be no problem making an A if you review and understand his old tests. We also had a nice curve on the ACS final ultimately making this class MUCH less of a headache than taking Bean (I had her for Organic 1).

Get the book and work the problems. Get old exams and work those, very similar to the actual tests. Recommend getting Bean's notes and go to study sessions. Get a copy to the ACS and study it.

There is no easy way around o-chem. However, Dr.Thummel does curve at the end. I took him for both O-chem I & II and got A's, but only by busting my azz off. I read the book and practice his HW problems, also I work on alot of his old exams before the real test (they're really similar) Anyway, if anyone interested, contact me [email protected]

This is a 3000 course so do not expect it to be easy. A lot of material during lectures so it has to be reviewed between classes. Do the homework. The prof is always available for help if you need it! He is fair and knows his subject.

Professor Thummel is a thorough professor. However, he does not provide notes or anything helpful and his website is nonfunctional. I had to miss class a bunch this semester and ended up self-teaching; it was rough. Get a hold of old exams.
