He's an enjoyable professor with a dry sense of humor & clear expectations. Always replies/helps. Quizzes are given randomly over assigned readings & this is what makes attendance mandatory. The quizzes are easy only if you've read the books (not skimmed or researched). 3 papers (5 pages ish, clear directions), average of quiz grades & that's it.

I would definitely recommend this professor to a friend. He is organized, follows his syllabus, and is very clear about what he expects from you. As long as you keep up with the reading and put some real effort into the papers he assigns, then you should be fine. He does make you work for your grade, but it isn't an unreasonable amount.

Best English professor at UH. He pushes you to be more critical of what you read. His paper instructions are clear. Perhaps the most challenging class to take at UH.

He is a really knowledgable prof and his class discussions are really interesting. He obviously knows his stuff, but is very good about having discussions, while still keeping class on track. A lot of pop quizzes. Occasionally they seem a little unfair, but overall if you attend and read you should be fine. A lot of reading. Don't skip the books

He was strict in the sense that he had a specific way he wanted you to write papers but was also nice and approachable. I had no interest in the class and hardly ever participated so i deserve the grade i got C-. In retrospect i wish i would've read what he assigned in order to get an A. We read about 1 novel per week which sucked bc they were long

I really enjoyed this course. At first the subject didn't really appeal to me, but after time I felt very interested. He is a gentle but strict professor. He is concise and clear about what he expects, and he is a fair grader. I would take him again. His passion infused passion onto his students.

No-nonsense, witty, organized, and knowledgeable are my foremost thoughts regarding Professor Aboul-Ela. Sophomore level course that focuses on implicit literary analysis. He will not hold your hand. YOU MUST READ and you will write. He is extremely helpful to those who seek it earnestly. Utilize his office hours if you need further assistance.

Helloooo... Easily the best literature profession I've ever had. His is a discussion-oriented classroom, so be prepared to participate and for the time to fly by. He shows a sincere interest in (and thoughtful consideration) of everyone's opinions. Three essays (5-7 pages each) and periodic pop quizzes. Absolutely take a class with him if you can.

By far the best English professor I've taken at UH. Super thorough, keeps discussions interesting. He is very sarcastic and some people don't like it (I do). This is one of those classes that you will actually MISS when it's over. Very interesting material. Some people had trouble making an A. I did not have that issue. (Postcolonial Literature)

It was a good class. He kept discussions interesting. We had three essays worth eighty percent and reading quizzes worth twenty. The quizzes were picky and hard, but he graded the papers fairly. The last paper was a little challenging, but everything else was straightforward. His office hours are very helpful; he will meet with those who ask.

Had him for postcolonial lit. Some of the reading was really good, others were a little tedious. The papers are clear, I got A's on all of them. You must read or he will call you out. Pop quizzes over reading. I recommend taking this class, it is a decent amount of work but nothing to stress about.

His personality takes about three or four weeks to get used to, but once you do, he's really an easy going guy. He's sarcastic and gets offeneded if you don't take his class seriously. Read the work and you won't get made fun of, or put on the spot. His papers are simple if you've followed along.

I liked this class. He's intelligent, eloquent and sometimes funny. This class involoved lots of class discussion over several books we had to read. He chose good books and again, I would suggest taking him for any class. I got A's on all my essays. He's kind of cute too...in a strange way.

He seems really aloof when you first meet him but on closer aquaintance he is warm, helpful and both intellectual and deep. Be warned he is also quite the "lefty"! You have to take his class with an open mind and want to learn about new world POVs.
