Every lecture I go in hoping to learn, but he is technically incompetent and always mumbling. He'll write on a digital white board instead of just showing a problem, his hand writing is not legible. He will ask a question, not even wait a full second, then ask "Hellooo???", it's not very encouraging, considering how bad campus internet can be.

I read every comment on him since 2001, and they're all still true in Dec 2020, except for him offering extra credit. This semester's class is completely online due to COVID, and he still isn't proficient at screen sharing in Zoom after 10 weeks. Incompetent at technology! No scheduled office hours, you'll be teaching yourself mostly. Retire plz!

This has to be one of the worst professors I have ever had. I'm sure he hasn't always been this way, considering he is practically 90 years old. I showed up to class every day and I don't know why. It was a waste of fifty minutes every class period, due to incoherent mumbling. Avoid him at all costs. You will save your gpa and sanity.

This guy does not know how to teach a class. His lectures are terrible, long-winded, lack even a semblance of structure, and are sometimes nonsensical. Students often have to correct his examples and marks on homework. Stay away if you want to keep your sanity.

Worst lecturer I've had. Nice guy, but it's simply time for him to retire. Class was extremely easy. It felt like high school math. Very little calculus, no proofs. Extra credit built into all tests. If you're taking this class to prep for FM, you're out of luck. Less than half of FM syllabus is covered, and it's much easier. Take for the easy A.

Comment:
Lectures are never on topic and it's usually 30+ minutes of him writing an example down wrong, rewriting it on the board, doing half of it (wrong) and then moving on. It was maddening. Homework is not at all like the tests. Tests are fair but you have to teach yourself everything. I didn't get anything out of either 627 or 630 with him. Avoid him!

Comment:
His lectures are quiet and filled non sequiturs. He does not show very many examples in class, and he often does not fully finish or explain the examples he does provide. His hw schedule is inconsistent: you'll have 3 weeks of nothing and then an assignment due for 4 lectures straight. You have to dedicate yourself to read the book if you want an A

Comment:
If you study the textbook you'll be fine. People tend to overlook the part of syllabus that strongly urges reading the material before the lecture, which he doesn't mention in class. Lectures only make sense if you've done the reading, if not, you might as well stay home. He usually gives a fair amount of partial credit on tests and a nice curve

This class was terrible. I'm a 4.0 student and I ended up getting a C in the class. I went to office hours, did the homework, studied a lot, but he was not helpful at all. His lectures are confusing at best.

While teaching he seems absent minded. He will spend an entire class going through an example, realize he made a mistake, and say he will correct it the next class. He never follows through. He loves to call people out for answers and then will insult them if they are wrong. Please refuse taking any course from him. Katz and Duncan's wife are best.

Probably the worst math teacher there is at KU. Theres no point in going to class because you don't learn anything in class. If your taking a class with him you better be good at teaching yourself the material.

What a horribly, awful teacher! If you can avoid this teacher, do it! I was actually re-taking Calc 1, and I thought going into this class it would be somewhat easier, but it was WAY worse. He is smart, but can NOT teach. His wife is the co-instructor of this class and is VERY strict. Be ready to teach yourself. Very disappointed.

Will make time to talk to you outside of class, very nice and interested in his students. He is an extremely talented mathematician. But that's the rub. He has a hard time instructing people who don't grasp the concepts quickly and the exams are extremely difficult. Take if looking for a challenge.

He is a nice guy, but his teaching style is horrible. All he does is talk really abstractly and generally about what we're doing and hardly ever does pertinent examples. On around 75% of the homework problems I had to search through the text to figure out what the questions were even asking. You basically have to teach yourself

Don't expect to learn from the instructor in class. If you don't read the book and just do the homework you will do bad. Very unclear with his teaching methods. Beware! he will not accurately prepare you for the mid-term. Too bad he makes the Mid-term and final for all math 121 classes. I put in (A) effort for a (B)grade.

He wastes a lot of class time going off on tangents and ridiculing students for not knowing their height in centimeters over and over again. He can take all period just working through 3 problems and still never really get to the point. His midterm and final are about 3-5 times as difficult as he lets on or prepares you for. Willing to help but...

Good guy, not so great teacher. Will help you if you seek it out. He is of an older school of teaching, so whilst he is a heavy researcher, he still makes a lot of time for his students. If you don't do the work, expect to fail his class. Really really smart guy.
