Dr. Saenger is honestly one of the nicest and gentlest people I have ever met. So kind, understanding, and really hardworking. I am not interested in the class myself but I think having him as a professor is great. I respect him, so I do my best in the class. If you have any issue, just tell him. He sometimes brings food and dogs to class.

Pretty goofy guy, the class is easy enough if you just read the syllabus and determine what you need to do/ what character you should be.

He's a very laid back teacher and encourages group discussion and ideas, so definitely participate. There's no tests but there's several essays. He's a little goofy and awkward but it's really clear he cares about what he teaches and makes an effort to make the literature accessible to everyone.

I'm an English major and he gave me poor grades on my essays, he wants them written in a certain way but he doesn't explain how to do that. He's egotistical and always thinks he is right. He's nice enough but not my cup of tea.

Not clear on Instructions or what to write in notes. At all. I had to go to office hours to get things clarified. Allows rewrites on most papers because his specific way of writing essays is tricky. We read plays for most of the class vs expanded. All of the class is conversational Exams/test are not bad

Class structure was too loose/informal. No idea of expectations. Very cocky and egotistical. Uses position of authority as an opportunity to stand on a soap box and preach to a conscripted audience. Awkward humor. Will never take another class with him.

Comment:
He's not awful. Class discussions tended to get off topic and he refused to fix that. Did a pretty good job teaching to some folks who hadn't had much lit. The class was too easy for me. I wish he'd lecture and be more organized, because he obviously has a wealth of knowledge he could share more effectively that way!

I took 3 classes with Dr. S, and he's one of my favorite teachers ever. He's goofy-fun, but always able to simplify concepts into very common terms. He relates literature to life in unexpected, impressive ways. He doesn't lecture, which may annoy students who aren't willing to participate or form their own opinions. Incredibly kind, down-to-earth.

Dr. Saenger has somewhat of a unique formula for papers--may throw off a few seasoned writers. Other than that, hard work and participation will be rewarded. Always remembered my name, years later. A dear man.

I do not suggest this professor at all. He doesn't let you know what his expectations are, you don't get much choice in what you want to write about except in the final paper and his final exam is absurd. He didn't stimulate any interest in the subject matter and I don't feel like I know any more about Shakespeare after taking the class.

I didn't appreciate him until I graduated and started teaching. He's one of the few English professors who actually tried to teach us the process of analyzing literature and didn't expect us to know literature jargon from the get go. He's underappreciated.
