Jan is da man!!! My favourite film professor by far. Midterms are a little challenging but if you do the readings and attend lectures you will do fine. No exams in most classes and the presentations are a breeze! Textbooks are very informative.

Jan is one of the nicest profs I've ever had. He clearly knows his stuff, and really wants to teach his students about it-- that's where we hit the problems, the teaching. He seems to know a lot of detail about the films and their background, but talks in circles. It's also hard to get a straight answer from him. Really great guy though!

Really good guy, really bad prof. Knows it all and can't teach it worth a damn. It was 50 minutes of him expressing how he wanted more time to speak to us... Most of the films were quite good. Stay on top of the films, read the text book. You wont get much form Jan. Midterm and final are easy if you've watched the films/know the details.

I've taken many courses with him. The good? He's passionate, funny, and just plain adorable. Tests are fair and very easy if you've done the readings and attended screenings. The bad? His lectures are well, useless. As a previous reviewer said, any knowledge you gain during class is "incidental". Meandering and structureless. But I like his accent!

Passionate prof, provides students the freedom to explore film topics through seminar discussions as well as room to explore film interests through the work-at-home final paper. Mid-term is a breeze if you simply do the readings, as it should be.

Jan is a nice guy but his lecturing needs serious work. He is clearly knowledgeable about and loves film but he lacks focus in his teaching. I love film and I found myself zoning out frequently in his class. Some people love his classes but I wouldn't take another one.

Comment:
Jan is a lovely lovely man, but he obviously needs a bit of help teaching. Whatever I've learned in his classes is just incidental. His passion for film is undeniable, but his lectures are lazy, off-topic and made up of student presentations of non-tested material. Readings aren't assigned, and the midterm is a joke.

Comment:
He seems to have a lot of knowledge of the material but a very difficult time expressing it. He rambles and stutters and goes off topic. The "discussions" drag on and are very hard to follow. He asks for a lot from the reading without clarifying what he will test on. Some of the films are reallly long and boring but if you read before, you'll be ok

I gotta say the course is easy in general, so take it. Jan does add some good points, but I mean what can you really say about the history of film? Read the book and you'll find some little interesting things here and there.

Most interesting elective I've had so far. Jan explains things from the most basic level possible. Concepts were very easy to grasp. I actually ENJOYED writting the final exam.( But I'm one of those freaks who actually likes essay writing, so that's probably a biased point of view). :P

Jan cannot express his knowledge of film well. He is often flustered and rambles on about useless information. He can be entertaining to listen to at times. BUT the lectures drag on, and you dont a page full of useful notes at the end of a 2hr class.

Film program at U of W is this one prof. It is a sad cash grab program with no merit with a worthless degree when you finish. If he actually is knowledgeable he doesn't let on in lectures. High school quality student presentations were 90% of the class.

Taught virtually nothing. Made the same simple/childish 5-6 points every single week. Virtually the entire class every class was taken up by equally shallow student presentations. Don't take film at Waterloo.
