Comment:
Dr. Shah definitely knows a lot about the subject but hardly knows anything about teaching effectively. The only two tests were the midterm and the final and he would pull paragraphs out of random chapters and black out words and expect you to fill them in. When telling us to prepare he said "read everything"...

In person: Great! Good lectures, straightforward grading. Dr. Shah wants his students to succeed. Online: I honestly feel bad for professors during COVID. But if there's a chance you'll have Dr. Shah for an online format, look into other sections. He tried and was very fair, but any calc class online is bound to be a disaster in some way

BONUS, BONUS, BONUS! (He absolutely loves giving out easy bonus points). He never gave a question on the test that he didn't cover in class. Also, he is a genuinely nice guy. But, be sure to never have any technology out in his class, or else he gets aggravated.

This was the absolute worst class ever! Homework was nothing like the tests, and most everyone in the class failed the FIRST exam! When I started the class there were 11 students, when I dropped in FEBRUARY, there were only SEVEN students left.

Shah is a great choice if you plan on taking Cal I at MSU. There's lots of homework, some optional. However, the tests are a lot easier than these questions. The way he describes the difficulty of tests can be intimidating but I believe he just wants to make sure his students are prepared for future math classes. Take advantage of EC opportunities!

I took Shah for MTH 261 in the fall and I was miserable. He assigned hours of homework each night (you meet everyday since it is 5 credit hours). I'm a math major and I almost changed my major because his course was so overwhelming. He is a highly intelligent, kind man. He really knows his stuff, but expects you to learn HUGE concepts in one day.

Good teacher but, expects a lot out of you. Be prepared to put a lot of time and effort into your class with him. He does give a lot of effort as well which isn't that common. You will learn a lot if you can make it though with him.

He gives tons of extra credit and it helps your grade a lot. He also offers a ton of study sessions, which are for the most part pretty helpful. There is a lot of homework but the grader is pretty lenient and the tests are a lot easier than the homework. Very passionate professor and would take again.

If you take him plan on doing hours of homework every night. Also know that he only has 5 or 6 questions on his test which can tank your grade really fast if you are a person that is a bad test taker. I found him very unhelpful during office hours but seems others have found success. I'd choose a different instructor unless your a natural at math.

Dr. Shah is a challenging professor, but is usually available, or will make time, to help if you're struggling. HW can be lengthy and slightly difficult, but it must be completed as its counted for a grade. Dr. Shah will give extra credit, and his test are about 5-6 questions. Overall, if you do the work and study hard you'll get an A

Dr. Shah is an amazing professor. He is very passionate about his students and passionate about the subject he teaches. He gives TONS of extra credit in the semester. He gives good amount of homework, which is harder than the tests, but that really prepares you for the exams. Going to class is very important to him, so I don't recommend skipping.

Dr. Shah is an awesome professor, and I would take him for MTH 280 if he offered it next semester. He is really passionate about his work, and passionate that you understand it. He offers tons of extra credit. No calculators or phones, but he makes it easy. It really helps you understand the math better, and better prepare you for the future. 10/10

I'm not a natural at math but ended up with an A in his calc 1 class. Tests are typically 5 questions long with an extra cred question worth 10 pts at the end that can really help your grade. He also gives about 10-15 extra cred pts outside class. Recommend to go to class everyday, do all homework (easy pts) and go to review sessions (very helpful)

Avoid calc 2 with him if possible. If you have to take calc 2 with him make sure your other classes are not work heavy, because you WILL have homework every night and the homework is graded based on correctness. He rarely goes over homework questions in class. This is a major class for me, but this class is rough and a time eater.

Not the greatest teacher. Focused way too much on proofs and abstract than concrete examples. As an engineer major I didn't need the abstract stuff. He didn't give much help on a thought process to solving proofs. Gave LOTS of extra credit. Without it I probably would've failed the class. I wouldn't refer him to anyone but I won't discourage anyone

He is passionate about his work. Focus on his notes, not the book. Tests have surprising questions, but most of the questions are moderate-leveled. He is more than helpful in office hours (and even extends them to midnight). He will do anything in his power to help you in this course. He offers an obscene amount of extra credit. Take him!

I had him for Calc II and Calc III. The class can be difficult, but stay on top of HW and you'll be fine. He puts a lot of emphasis on the Solved Examples from the textbook on his tests. Do them the night before a test! Also, expect plenty of EC opportunities and take them!
