Comment:
Tough class, but plenty of opportunities to get points. It has a nice curve in the grading. Lots of extra credit available. You read the textbook and take weekly quizzes that can be tough during classification and identification. Monday lectures help outline the weekly unit. Go the same time every week to get to know a TA. Go to discussions too.

Mullen knows what he's talking about, but his lectures are not worth attending. Going to discussions is a bit more helpful, but the key to passing is reading the chapters thoroughly and spending as much time in the plants center as you can. passing the weekly quizzes is crucial. Tests are really difficult, but a lot of extra credit is given.

Basically, this class is all self-taught. Mullen is a nice guy, and his jokes are sometimes funny, but you don't learn anything in class. However, if you read the chapters, take notes over them, and study in the plant center, you'll be fine.

Tests are the biggest thing in his class. Every week is a quiz outside of class. Make sure to read the textbook every week. Not everything on the quizzes and tests are in the lectures and he lets you know. I did enjoy his teaching and he opens every class with a joke that's decently funny.

Agree with everyone else that the TAs in the Plant Center do most of the teaching. Very helpful to read the chapter as well as take notes. I didn't attend the recitations due to confusion and lost 30 participation points. Also exams are very tough. Took fall of 14 and no big curve like anticipated. Don't bank on a final curve...

Basically the TAs in the plant center do most of the teaching. One the of the toughest classes I've taken thus far at Iowa State. Weekly quizzes are such a pain. If you are not an agronomy major, do not take this class.

Weekly quizzes can be tough for some specially if they do not come from an agriculture background. Exams can be tough as well. Do not be afraid as he curves those and allows for 50ish points in class to be missed and still get A. +extra credit. Book is needed. His lectures are usually very applied to real world situations making them worth while.

Dr. Mullen is an absolute peach. He really knows his stuff, and I love going to class. People don't like his tests because they're tough. Exams for him are using the knowledge and knowing how to apply it. Without understanding of application, his classes will be tough for you. But most importantly, his jokes are hilarious.

The tests have nothing to do with the weekly quizzes. Quizzes are relatively easy though and he puts a wicked curve on at the end of the semester. At least an entire letter grade.

Exams have nothing to do with what you learn. It just seems to come out of his head. Class averages for the test were less than 60 . Weekly quizzes were a pain.

Class overall was very enjoyable, lots of time spent on corn and soybeans. When the small grains unit started he just talked about beer and whiskey making. Great class very educational.

Weekly quizes extremely easy but the grading scale is wack, to much of grade is based on exam scores! Class was like having an hour conversation with your grandpa jokes included!

Mullen is an absolutely beauty but class felt like I a sit down talk with my grandpa. The only entertaining part of this class was hearing the few muffled laughs after his 10 minute long jokes. Other than that it is COMPLETELY self taught

It was a good class and Mullen was a fun professor, just be careful not to get behind. Agron 114 has weekly quizes, and falling behind on these makes it difficult to pass.
