If there was one thing going in to this class I wish i knew, it is MEMORIZE THE PHYLOGENIC TREES. Gaut is an amazing, funny lecturer and hes very sweet and nice. He genuinely cares for his students. His exams are vey straight forward and fair. One of my favorite professors.

Comment:

Gaut was one of the best professors I have taken for any bio class. He made the lectures pretty interesting and opened up the class to music that he chose or that the highest scoring students on the midterm chose. The tests are pretty hard with "two of the above, all of the above or none of the above". So long as you study, you'll do good.

Honestly the best professor I had the pleasure of taking so far. He made this class so enjoyable and he's just an overall amazing person. Tests are overall ok, nothing too difficult. Nothing mandatory but go to discussions, they help, and lectures. Lectures tell you everything you need to know-- book is unnecessary. Get to know him, he's great

No mandatory discussions, lectures, textbooks, or homework. Posts notes AND audio file for lecture online. I still recommend going to lecture. Three midterms with lowest one dropped, but his exams are tricky. More application than memorization, know specific examples, "A,B,C, A and B, none of the above, all of the above, etc"

Easy class if you are good at memorization (makes you memorize ridiculous things like scientific names of species). Never paid attention in class and just studied off the slides/notes he posted and got an A. Test is extremely detailed and requires you to know a lot of diagrams. Also very tricky with options like "two/all/none of the above" etc.

Great professor. Boring topics but he keeps you interested. Class is deceptively easy though. I didn't pay attention to it and got a B, give it your attention and an A is pretty easy. Pretty much memorize. 3 midterms (1 is dropped) and final is 100% your grade. So don't mess up those days. Curve is pretty generous too. Take this prof.

Easiest class I've taken at UCI thus far. EVERYTHING he says in lecture and that are on his slides WILL be on the test. If you read the chapters and do Mastering Bio you'll succeed far and beyond in this class. lectures were interesting and I always looked forward to the next class (which were at 9:00am) so thats really saying' something. LOVE HIM!

Gaut is a cool guy. He makes the class fun, but his tests are super tricky. If you want an A, you got to really know your material. But he makes his tests so tricky I feel like it doesn't really test you on what you know. It involves a lot of test taking skills, in my opinion. For me, I wouldn't take him if you want an easy A!

An engaging professor - tries to make lectures fun even if the topic is kinda dry. The class has 3 midterms & the lowest score is dropped - they're kind of tricky. Tests are based on lecture notes, which is nice bc you dont need to buy the textbook. Overall, an easy class if you put in effort, since no HW, and one of my fav profs on campus. :)

Friendly prof with interesting lectures and tries to make students laugh/ engaged in subject. He posts notes, podcasts, and slides online which is very helpful! 3 midterms and a final with the lowest midterm dropped. This is very helpful and forgiving, so make sure to do your best and get the best score you can!

Very passionate, he posts detailed notes & audio/slides from lectures, and he's hilarious. Very accessible during office hours & truly cares about your success. However, the class is not very structured. No HW and attendance is not mandatory for discussion/lectures. If you are self-motivated then definitely take his course.

Professor Gaut's a pretty cool guy, but I hate the fact that his Bio 94 exams (which are unnecessarily tricky) don't thoroughly assess how much I know. It doesn't help when I have to worry about how questions are worded when I'm already under stress trying to recall everything. Exams make the material seem much harder than it actually is.

Amazing teacher. Very clear, and very passionate. He lectures off of notes that he posts online; you don't even really have to read the book. Grade breakdown is just 2 midterms and a final. Test questions can be a bit tricky, i.e. "2 of the above". Class is entertaining; I really learned a lot. He's very warm and welcoming; go talk to him!

Dr. Gaut is such an amazing lecturer! He is by far the best lecturer I have had at UCI! He keeps you engaged in class with his upbeat and witty humor! You can tell that he truly cares about his students by his hard attempt to learn our names! However, his exams are pretty challenging! Be prepared to be thrown off by his exam questions!

His bio seminar is amazing! all you have to do is attend all the field trips and you get the Pass. The field trips were also interesting and he makes sure that we're having fun. His seminar is to give you insight to nature around orange county and interacting with a professor. Take his bio seminar if you can!

Okay guys...I got an A+ and it was all because I read his provided lecture notes over, and over, and over again. I read the textbook too, but only as supplement. But it really helped that he wrote lecture notes! Seriously! Listening to the recorded lectures over and over again help too...

Massive upgrade from the Pairs of professors provided in 93. He is really enthusiastic and cares about the material. Dont take him too lightly though, study the material well. Appreciate this guy because professors like him are rare.
