Comment:
Professor Putney has literally memorized his self-written course pack, and presents it in a monotone. I did not like his way of teaching, and there are very few grades. However, if you study the course pack and do the journals, you WILL receive a good grade. Attendance is mandatory for your grade. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HIS OFFICE HOURS--very helpful.

He is a very serious teacher & hard to understand! But I actually liked his class. Very intersting. You have to really work for your grade though.

Talks very quietly and is quite old. His class is kind of boring, but he is very informative. If you can deal with a man in his 80s talking in a monotone, talk his class. DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK. You'll never use it.

It is hard to pay attention in his class because he is an older gentleman and talks in monotone, but if you just stay awoke and pay attention you will get an easy A. His test are easy, he tells you everything that the test will consist of. You can't be a slacker in his class.

Very Knowledgeable teacher. If you study the coursepack and the vocabulary and you will do fine in his class. Do not buy the textbook because you are not going to use it. Just buy the coursepack. Attendance is mandatory to him, so make sure to show up in class because is part of your grades. I will recommend him to anyone.

Beware, this guy is a total jerk. Not only wouldn't he excuse absences when I was in the hospital (and provided documentation), but he took points off my final grade. I got As on every journal, quiz, and test but gave me a B for being hospitalized. "Excusing this many absences doesn't feel right" (I missed 5 classes, but ACED everything!)

His class was a complete letdown. He was very close minded and seemed turned off by questions. If I didn't know anything else about philosophy I would have gave up all hope for this subject. Terrible teacher... not a Socrates :P

You must attend class to get/keep your grade each day missed is points off. He didn't use the book at all, course pack is all you need. If your opinion is different than his or the class you are pretty much shunned. Tests are too hard for a 100 level class. Extra credit is awarded but confusing. Easily confused and a lot of things he says are wrong

This is not an easy 100 lvl class, if you went an A better not take him or his class. Great class, loads of info. No need for the book just take good notes and buy the course pack. He can confuse the class pretty quick so speak up if your lost. Super wise old man though, learned a lot from him. Make sure you can spell good on the quizzes!

World Religions. Dr. Putney is a kind & gentle person. He's slow moving & slow talking, & has incredible knowledge. If you take notes & participate in discussion you can stay focused; lots of information & food for thought. Get coursepak but don't buy the book. Only 2 quizes, midterm and final. Study the vocab.

The textbook is pretty much worthless for this class, and you can skip having the coursepack too (and still get a good grade) if you take good notes in class. Tests and quizzes are fairly easy and extra credit is offered. The main problem in this class is really just paying attention, because it can get boring pretty fast.

Again, as everyone else said, don't buy the textbook, coursepack is all you need. He's a nice professor and covers the material well. I liked him, though I know some thought he was boring. Tests were easy as long as you wrote what was on the board and listened. I'd recommend him if you need to get a gen-ed out of the way.

Forget about getting the book, waste of money, just get the course pack. Putney's lectures are extremely boring and can sometimes be disorganized because he knows an incredible amount of information about the subject. Attendance and participation are a part of the grade, as are blackboard discussions. Don't sit in front, you'll still fall asleep.

Yes, Professor Putney is old. It wasn't really that much of a problem until he missed three or four classes in a row. That was worrisome. The midterm and final were some of the hardest tests I've ever taken, but study, be familiar with the concepts. Attend, and discuss in, every class. GO ON BLACKBOARD. Coursepack is everything.

Dr. Putney is very knowledgable. The class can be extremely boring. Attendance and participation in class or on blackboard is mandatory. There are only six grades in the class, 2 quizzes, 2 class participation grades and a midterm and a final. It is not an easy A rather you HAVE to study to get a decent grade. It was decent, but not easy.

Useless teacher. He should have been retired by now. Still comes to teach. Avoid at all cost. His tests are illusive and intimidating. No A's even if you screwed up just one test. Why does ODU have to keep such faculties who are not so attentive towards the course and student's progress? So Better AVOID AT ALL COST... BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY...

David Putney is very knowledgeable, and knows his stuff. Class attendance is required and the class is not extremely difficult as long as you STUDY. Make sure make as many blackboard posts as possible because if you don't it will definitely affect your grade. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!! I never even opened it, just be sure to get the coursepack.

Condescending!Hates being challenged. Can't handle knowledgeable students who do well.Said he wouldn't count off for spelling unless it changed the meaning, but on the final he took off for a misspelled word.I got every question on every test/quiz right until then & when asked him about it and he said "no one should get everything right." So lame!
