Harry McDean changed my academic career. He was the first professor who refused to let me coast through his class, he chewed me out and refused to tolerate mediocrity, and I am a vastly better person for it. I took five 400+ level courses with him; what I learned helped me rapidly advance in my business and consulting career. Fantastic teacher.

I took Harry McDean for U.S. history back in 87, and he still stands out as one of the most influential characters in my life. Amazing lecturer, world class professor of history.

Hilarious and very passionate. Best history teacher I've ever had. Seriously made history interesting to me for the first time. Loved to sit in the front rows to watch him teach; bears many funny faces along with an impeccable calibur. Always made me smile. Lectured with such vigor that I couldn't be unmoved. Highly recommend taking his class.

It's basically like getting a lecture from Theodore Roosevelt. He insults and threatens his students, but you'll love him anyway. One of the few professors worth his salt at SDSU. By far my favorite professor until my graduation. Went to his lectures again, even after I passed his class. He's just that informative and entertaining.

Oh goodness McDean. He is strange, makes odd comments. He keeps u on ur toes, jumps around a lot in lecture. 3 Essay tests with no notes. No book for the lecture class, the books are for break-out session only. take good notes and go to every class. Gives u 3 questions for tests and then randomly picks one to write on so u must prepare for all.

at first i thought he was a wierdo but he knows his stuff. halfway through semester i went to his office hours and he knew me from class; where i usually sat and that i was left handed in a room with 300 people. i talked to him a few times after that and found that he is more than willing to help students with anything. he is a really good teacher.

He is very funny, but jumps around a lot. The midterms are soley on what he sais in class so you have to go. But if you go you will got a good drade. He doesnt give pluses or minuses which helps. I recomend this class its not hard.

This guy has tenure so whatever comes out of his mouth is jibber jabber. He is interesting though with his sudden outbursts and hip shaking- he's a cool grandpa. Dont bother buying the books unless you really have to. Choose the right TA because they end up giving you the final grade.

mcdean is an interesting fellow.. most of the time he acts like hes better than everyone.. at first I thought I wouldnt do that great in this class.. The lecture and the discussion were completely different classes which sucked.. Good luck on getting a good discussion leader.. it will make or break your grade

Nothing seemed to flow together...the books didn't connect with lectures which didn't connect with the essay prompts. No matter how much time and effort I put into the class my grades were ridiculous. Good luck...

Not too difficult of a class. He's a VERY entertaining man. He would make the whole lecture hall laugh and we'd look at each other thinking "did he really just say that?"

Very odd but very entertaining. 4 essay tests on different elements of US history (econ, wars, etc). 3 books tests.Must go to class to keep up, but its not bad at all. TAs make or break you. McDean cusses a bunch but keeps your attention, mumbles too much but no one knows what he says anyways (even the TAs) definitly worth taking if you must!

This class is comprised of lecture and breakout sessions. The breakout deals with the three books assigned and they are inversely related to the lectures, but are not included in the 3 lecture tests. Depending on your TA, you will probably have three book tests on the assigned material. The lectures are entertaining and very informative.

This was a random class. He is crazy. Most the time I have no idea what he is talking about. However...he knows a lot of random interesting stuff. I learned a lot but his method of teaching is weird. If you get a good TA, you're set..if not GOOD LUCK! Don't take this class unless you actually go to class and can deal with DRY!!! humor.

This class is the bane of my existence. His lectures are not clear and he spends too much time telling foul stories and swearing. He assigns 3 contemporary books to read. 75% lecture esaay exams, 15% reading exams, 10% participation.

I can't believe all these ratings on here that say what a funny and interesting prof this guy is...I'm a junior transfer student who's had plenty of professors and this guy is one of the worst...Between his lame attempts at humor and the annoying child voices he makes, one can't help but be distracted from the otherwise interesting material....

Horrible teacher, very unclear (TA has to clear it up), insults the class every single day, tells students they will not amount to anything, makes students feel ignorant, puts down SDSU (has an obsession with Harvard), I got an A in the class, but I had to work extremely hard, told class he wanted to brainwash us, very rude teacher, worst at state
