Dr. Alvarez is a great guy, though he is very intimidating at first. He is very professional, but will give you encouragement and excellent feedback. Honestly, he helped me grow in confidence in my writing skills and was understanding with all of the struggles COVID-19 brought into the picture. Would recommend; he has a lot of knowledge and class!

Wonderful professor, he is really clear about how he will be grading things and will inform you down to the smallest detail. It would be hard to fail his class if you pay close attention to everything he tells you and follow the instructions closely.

Professor Alvarez was hands down one of the best professors that I have ever had. He was incredibly respectful, cares about his students' well being quite a bit, and gives reasonable amounts of work. You do have to actively participate in this class to pass, but he doesn't ask for anything ridiculous from his students. 5/5 would HIGHLY recommend.

Prof was great. Very enthusiastic about class and the subject he was teaching. Get ready to write, there are a lot of assignments, but they are doable, and he gives good due dates. He is accessible outside of class, and is very helpful.

I was initially pretty scared of what this class would be like because of the ratings I'd read, but I really enjoyed it. Alvarez is a great professor, although his voice can bore you a bit. There's quite a bit of reading, but it's enjoyable. Class discussions are plenty and productive. Only bad thing is you don't know your grade until the end.

I would not recommend taking this professor. He requires you to lead class and has so many rules on what you can and can't do. You will only get an A if he thinks your work is what he would do. He is very rude towards his students and expects too much. Be prepared to talk in every class. Everything is wrong if its not his opinion.

Professor Alveraz is a nice person if he likes you. He does not have a problem calling anybody out. Found out all of our grades for the semester the last day possible. You have to work very hard to get a good grade and spend a lot of time picking apart the books you read.

Professor Alvarez is a good guy. He makes a point to get to know each of his students. You learn a lot about the world and colonialism. You read three books, write one big paper, and do three in- class writings. Attendance is mandatory, he makes you participate, but it isn't hard if you do the readings. Super tough grader with unclear guidelines.

This the worst professor I have ever had. Expects way too much from students. Professor is very disrespectful to students. Professor talks about how he has a phobia of Jews and Israelis. No matter what situation you are in do not take this Professors class, it will be the worst experience you ever have.

Prof Alvarez is a nice person. As a professor, he is not very good. He calls people out and expects too much from a 200 level course. I came into the semester as an English major and now have changed to Group Social Studies because of his teaching style. He is available and encourages office hours but he is very harsh if your writing is not his.

Alvarez is a good guy who genuinely wants students to like him. But, his grading techniques were horrible. He is very unclear as to what he wants, and he feels impossible to please. He will only give an A if he feels like he himself would have written it. Lots of papers, lots of reading, with a lot of non-constructive criticism. Wouldn't take again

Attendance is a big part of your grade, and all students are required to lead class discussion once. Everyone has to participate in discussion, and he is not afraid to call on students who are more quiet. The reading assignments aren't very long for each class but he expects in depth discussions. There aren't many papers and he grades fairly.

Participation and attendance matter big time with him. You will want to read deeply and come to class prepared to say something every single time. He calls on students who don't have their hands raised frequently. He's very hard to please when it comes to writing papers. He expects more than a 200 level course. I don't recommend Professor Alvarez.

I missed class due to an illness and my attendance grade is brought down to an 80%... one class period. He is a tough grader. Everyone is required to speak during class discussions. Don't know what to say? Too bad. Alvarez embarrasses students in front of the class. I feel so bad for them I honestly don't think he realizes how inappropriate he is.

NEED to go to class - he grades on attendance. Several papers to write throughout semester. Need to read books he assigns - everyone has to lead a class discussion on assigned reading and nobody knows when they will be picked. Lectures a lot about history topics even though it's an English class. Very slow on grading.

Professor Alvarez was overall a great professor, but you need to be ready to read an to read deeply because the material for this class was difficult at the best of times. For the amount of credit you get though, it's totally worth it. He has an accent, but it's easy to understand, although he does tend to get quieter the longer he talks.

The papers are hardest thing. He tears apart any paper you take to him & you end up struggling to finish at the end because you've rewritten it three times. Any other prof would have graded my papers higher. Felt like he wanted master's thesis for last 3 papers, and @ end of the semester, not possible. Way too hard for a 200 level class.

Alvarez is a nice enough guy and is generally interested in the opinions of his students. To be honest, I didn't see the whole "genre" aspect of his class but he does know what he's talking about when it comes to literature. My advice: ALWAYS DO THE READING AND FORM AN OPINION! Also, he has a British accent and says "bloody" which is amusing.

There aren't many assignments so not many opportunities for points; gives an indepth rubric and examples of past papers for each assignment. Focuses on postcolonialism instead of genre, but I didn't mind it at all. Wonderful to talk to and is always willing to talk about assignments and even stuff outside of class. Can attend events for extracredit

Comment:
Lectures don't make any sense. He likes to throw out names or words in other languages to try and sound smarter but it is completely irrelevant to the books.
