Comment:
I like Dr. Downey personally. I don't like environmental chem with them though. It is very disorganized w 2 different methods of teaching. If you are a biology major looking for upper level chemistry credit look elsewhere, they don't want you, they don't like you. You have few tests and if you do bad that's that. Go to him quick for help.

Comment:
Dr. Downey is pretty intimidating because he is sarcastic and expects you to know the material. So, know your lecture info and be able to apply it to the labs. Don't show up late, either! Overall, he grades hard but I got a B and all my lab grades were pretty bad, so don't stress. He is pretty funny, too!

He taught me 9 years ago but had to say that he made me the chemist that I am today. He loves to teach and help everyone. The electives he taught were responsible for me getting into grad school as well as my current job. If you are a chemistry major, you will like him but if you are taking a required class, you probably wont.

Comment:
Lectures very long and boring. Professor Downey goes on rants about car batteries and his daughter. I would not suggest this class to people who struggle with chemistry, you probably will have to teach yourself a lot. He curves tests riduculously though, got high Cs on all my tests and ended up with an A-

tests aren't too bad if you study the right material-usually a hit or miss situation. he's willing to help those who go to class and actually want to learn the material. he's a good guy and entertaining. he curves at the end of the semester. take him!

he is an awful teacher. he goes off on tangents and does his own thing. theres no point in going to his class unless you want to learn about how soda is made, your car battery, and salad dressing ingredients. lots of info on the tests are not in lecture and he goes really slow my class is more than 2 chapters behind now and finals are almost here

basically we didn't have a lab 5 times because either one wasn't planned or something came up and it got canceled. Out of a 20 point lab report you get 10 points just for writing in your notebook which is basically a given. No tests or quizzes ever! he really tries to make things as simple as possible and he is really nice.

Hated him! He was SO boring and always put women down. Wish I never took his class. Wish they could get rid of him- would raise the interest levels and skills of the chemistry majors going through. WORST PROF EVER

Don't like him. Wastes time in the beginning of the lab period lecturing. When you ask him questions, he confuses you more. Then when you ask him to clarify, he gets frustrated. Then when you ask him more questions, he interrupts you and assumes he knows what you're asking and starts explaining an answer to a question you don't have.

Great professor for the upper level courses, and a lot of fun when you get to know him. He's also great for environmental and radiochemistry, since these this is what he really cares about.

Just wanted to put in a few good words for this guy to get his "points" up. I took him years ago for an upper level chem course, and he was really good. A fun guy when you get to know him - sort of the "good ol' boy" of the chemistry dept. He was good to me, even though I was a Bio major.

He maybe good for higher level classes but HORRIBLE for the lower. I've heard that he's chovanistic to the girls who come to him for help. Everything comes from the book basically. Tip: do all the problems he gives you in the book and you'll get As

Good teacher for difficult courses. Will provide tons of help if you genuinely work hard and don't beg for help at the drop of a hat. Has a great sense of humor once you get to know him. Good research adivisor too, but be prepped to work!
