Dr. Kearns is a great instructor. If you're a slacker, you shouldn't expect to do well in any class; Dr. Kearns is no exception. He's funny, passionate and really wants you to succeed if you make an effort. If you show up and pay attention, the pop quizzes are no brainers. If you slack and don't show, don't whine about failing a quiz or a test.

Very personable and extremely caring about his subject matter. The pop quizzes are easy but I seemed to only skip the classes that had them. Altogether a good teacher and a nice guy.

Pop quizzes, 3 exams, but if you literally show up and listen to lectures you will get the info easily- he is really straightforward. Really passionate about his subject and wears a different hawaiian shirt for the first like 20 classes which is funny. Kearns wants his students to do well and he will help you out if you need it. Recommend!

Dr. Kearns is a good man. Mineralogy sucks but he lays out everything you need to succeed. Don't mess around and try to study for the test only the night before and you'll be fine.

3 exams, pop quizzes, and a ton of homework assignments. He can be sometimes dry in lectures, but he's definitely passionate about the subject. Usually let us out 1520 minutes early from class. No attendance policy. Exams definitely aren't easy and he isn't very clear on what exactly will be on them, so be prepared for anything.

If you go to class and put in minimal work outside of class you will be fine. The tests are straight forward and he gives you a review power point a few days before. The final is cumulative but once again, super easy. He treats it like a gen-ed is supposed to be. I'm awful at science and got an A

5 pop quizzes, expect one in every section u learn. Attendance not mandatory, but might miss pop quiz (drops lowest). He NEVER posts grades, so keep everything so you can calc it. 50 question exams, not impossible if you study hard. Let's class out early (15 mins maybe). HWs add up to an exam grade so DO GOOD ON ALL OF THEM, theyre easy.

Kearns is a tricky man. He gives u easy when ur prepared for hard & vice versa. So be prepared for anything. Study everything. He gives out exam review slides before exams so that HELPS but u NEED to study every detail in those slides. I didnt learn that until the final. He somewht expects you to know to study for pop quizzes too. Manageable

Dr. Kearns is a real sweetheart. He loves what he teaches and loves his students. The class is by no means an easy class. come to class, study the notes, spend time outside of class looking at the minerals, study the powerpoint and ask questions and you'll do fine.

Literally the most boring man on planet earth. He knows what he is talking about but this class is a complete waste of time. Goes into extreme detail for absolutely no reason and does not make anything interesting. Tests are fair. Very strict when grading homework.

hes a sweetheart and its a pretty easy class. some of the homework is pretty hard and you defiantly have to study for his tests but overall still pretty easy. i would recommend it to people who, like me, usually hate science and just want to get it over with

Dr. Kearns taught my 1984 summer field geology course at JMU. I still remember the guy 27 years later. Very fair but matter of fact that it's up to the student to make the grade. Glad to see he's still around.

[Maymester] Four quizzes (1 per week), a final, and about 15 homework assignments. Homework is mindless and easy to get 100s on. Quizzes can be kind of tough because he doesn't always ask the questions you'd expect him to, but still very easy to do well on. The final is fair and overall the class is pretty easy and he teaches it knowing its a gened

i usually make A's pretty easily but i probably made a B in this one. pop quizzes and cumulative final. i think what makes it difficult to master is the breadth of information. he should consider shortening the amount of topics he lectures and tests. he's helpful in office hours
