If you teach yourself, take him. Answers questions in condescending tone and w/o full explanation, will do intermediate steps in head. He makes a lot of mistakes in lectures. Grade is 4 exams and final, hw is not graded. Exams are hard, do not rely on practice exams, know the vocab in book he uses it on exams. I do not recommend him for avg student

Took his class over the summer. Started out with 50+ students ended with about 20. This is NOT an easy class.... you're learning calc in 5 weeks so expect to be studying your ass off! I worked extremely hard and passed. well worth getting the class over with

This professor is not really helpful for people that prefer to study math themselves. He never replies his email when students ask questions, even with important ones like when is the test or which section it covers. All those information are for students who go to class. Date of exams are different from syllabus, without email notification.

Above-average professor. Lectures in class on new topics and answers homework questions. Easy class compared to calculus. Generally helpful and clear. Nothing spectacular about him, but nothing bad either. I wish there was some way to boost your grade (based solely off of 4 tests and final exam), but I still got an A and so can most people who try

He is kind. Do the HW and your will pass the class with no problem. He doesn't curve, but will do some scaling. Fair. Gives partial. 4 tests, AND 1 final. No dropped tests. I would recommend. His exams rarely change. Kind his old tests. ;)

Hes not that terrible but his you have to work for your grade. He was nice to our class. I recommend going to the Math Tutoring Center after class to do homework. He does give partial credit on exams for attempting a question. Compared to most Mason math teachers, he is not bad.

...while the test focused more on application. While going to class wasn't technically mandatory, I definitely recommend doing so because the test material comes from class. Shapiro was the most helpful teacher I have ever had. Every time I went to his office with only the intent of turning in HW he always asked if I needed help and understood all

I LOVED this class. It was my favorite all semester. You learn so many interesting things and Shapiro was simply fabulous at explaining everything. He wouldn't use a single theorem without first going through the proof on the board. I really liked how most of the homework was more proof focused to make you really understand the material while the..

He is clear. Not rude or mean. Always asks if there are any question. Took calc over the summer 4 week course. Wasn't bad. Read the book and practice. Math is all about practice. If you dont want to practice problems over and over then you probably wont pass with any teacher. I recommend him

I liked him, but I can see why others don't. He definitely believes there are stupid questions, and will say so. Attendance isn't absolutely necessary, but to get an A, it's either that or studying hard, because his tests get progressively harder. If you take his class seriously, you'll get along with him and get a good grade.

Boring lectures. Tests are hard and a lot of trickery. No grades for homework. Attendance is optional. Doesn't believe in curbing grades up. He tries to make the average grade around a 75.

If you're able to take calculus with a professor at GMU look no further than Dr. Shapiro. Took this class over the summer with no enthusiasm whatsoever, but when taken with Shapiro he's clear, and concise. He's generous with partial credit unlike the other math dept. teachers (especially the evil Jesus look alike), and he is very approachable.

He is a good professor. Does not explain all that well sometimes. In general, he is nice and always finds a way to give you lots of points on exams. Do the hw and look at his quizes, exams are close to his quizes. I recommend him for math 108

Teaching style is not all that bad...the beginning of the class is rough but the subjects get easier later on. He is available and tries to help and really doesn't grade too hard. Just DO THE HOMEWORK like for real I didn't do much of the homework and I got a B in the class. Do the homework and you shouldnt have trouble getting an A.

He really does a good job at explaining concepts with little class time. I came to his class from the other 125 section because you can actually HEAR him and HE can hear you too! If you follow along in class and do the homeworks you will do fine. There is a weekly quiz which helps because the tests are VERY similar to the quizzes and homeworks.

The worst math professor (possibly worst professor in general) I have ever taken in my entire history at George Mason. Had a quiz the second day of class on material he basically breezed through with no clear structure. I Dropped Shapiro's class and took the class again with a different teacher and got an A. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Spare yourself $1000.

His teaching style was difficult for me and probably many students & you will probably end up teaching yourself the material... He didn't answer some questions in class because they were too difficult or he wouldn't have had time and he usually makes mistakes on the examples.

Absolutely the worst professor I have taken at Mason! He doesn't know how to teach. He not helpful at all; if you ask a question, he makes you feel stupid.
