Comment:
Dr. Castagne is a solid choice for a French prof and I thought he was hilarious. He told us exactly what would be on our midterms so we knew what to study and gives enthusiastic lectures. He does call on students so be weary if you don't like that and I found his notes to be too vague so attending class was necessary to know what was going on.

The content presented in lectures are very brief for each chapter. You're expected to learn the rest on your own. Not many examples given of what to expect for tests/evaluations.

Gerard is a very reasonable guy, but an extremely tough grader. He is very knowledgeable though, and also very accessible by email. Not the best prof I've had, but definitely not the worst either.

Gérard is a great prof, I did the Frecker Program with him, as well as 3100. You will learn a lot in his classes. He is a very tough grader, so weigh your options, he may be the prof you learn the most from but get the worst mark from. I think its worth it though, my French wouldn't be at the level it is today without him.

Gerard is probably one of the best French profs I've had. He is a really hard grader, so don't expect more than a 75 without REALLY putting in A LOT of work. But his feedback really helps! Wants to see you succeed and respects students who try their best to become fluent. Very approchable and friendly, will banter with students.

Gerard is an amazing prof. He really does his absolute best to make sure we succeed in his courses. He is a tough grader but it makes you work harder to understand the topics. I am currently with him in Saint Pierre for the Frecker Program and he has made the trip so much more enjoyable. He's easy to talk to and loves a good joke. My favorite prof.

This was the worst class I have ever taken. Considering Ive done other French courses and got high grades, this left me with a poor mark and a lot of unnecessary stress. He does not give constructive feedback at all. He will just tell you that you made a grave error. AVOID this prof if you want to stay motivated in learning French.

Probably one of the most monotone and dry people I have ever met. Classes weren't very exciting but the midterms were easy because they followed the exact format and examples of the samples and the exam was the same. You could easily pass the class looking at those but attendance counts there and at the extra conversation classes.

I really enjoyed class with Dr. Castagne. The material was difficult for me at times but not because of the way he taught it. I think hes hilarious, and he really seems to care about his students. Once he knows your name, hell probably call on you in class, but hell help you through it if you are unsure of the answer. Enjoyed his class a lot.

VERY tough grader! He does not use constructive criticism, leaves unnecessarily rude comments on papers and tests. He uses personal bias when grading. Holds students to unrealistically high standards. My French did improve, but it's not reflected in my grades. Taking his classes will bring down your GPA and your self esteem! Would not recommend!

Phonomenal teacher with a lot of patience. In St. Pierre he would open up the francoforum for studying and give us one on one help if desired. Also went out of his way to provide us activities on weekends. I did not recieve an excellent mark in the course but he did everything could to ensure that i passed!

One of my favourite profs I've ever had. Very down to earth guy and very understanding. Very passionate about his language and helping others learn and understand it. He will call on you to participate in class, but in language classes it helps you get better. Would 100% take him for every class if I could.

Gérard is hands down the best prof I've ever had. He taught me 2100, 2101, 2300, and 3100. Makes me sad I won't have him any more for the rest of my degree as he doesn't teach past 3100. He does make you work hard for your grades, but in the end you come out with a much higher knowledge of french than you did going in. Recommend him 100%.

I've had Gerard for 2100,2101,2300 and 3100. He's genuinely a nice guy, but he does expect a lot from his students. He wants you to do well and to do well you need to go to class to learn the material. His tests are hard but if they're unfair and you tell him he'll usually remake the test for a redo. Overall good prof, but you need to work hard.

French guy teaching french, at first that makes sense till you hear he could not stand when someone pronounced things wrong or didn't understand. He chose the one guy in the class who was french to answer questions to move on faster. I had to get deferred out cause even with the final i wouldn't of passed

I had Gérard for 2100 and 2101 and he was one of the best profs I've had for french. He is a bit of a tough grader but it really helps you in the long run. I was failing at the beginning of his classes but getting A's at the end. He cares about his students. I am definitely taking more classes with him in the future and would highly recommend him.

he's a very tough grader, he tries to help outside of class but most of the time he just makes everything worse. picks favourites in the class and if you don't agree with his opinion you'll be graded harder .expects as soon as you learn something to 100% know it.

Comment:
He's a really nice guy, but his lessons are all over the place and very repetitive. He's also a really tough grader and doesn't have a clear method to his marking. He expects a very high level of french writing skills from the students and his feedback isn't very detailed.
