Comment:
Uses the class to read his own poetry to the class. Is good at helping you break down the structure of a poem, but critiques every subject matter. College students don't have enough life experience to satisfy his expectations. Forces every student to read their very personal poetry to the class every day. Unclear of what he expects from students.

Plays major favorites. I never missed an assignment and received supportive comments (he doesn't give grades for short stories/poems) on almost everything I turned in. I ended up getting a C- in the class. Good teacher to take if you're a skilled writer and you can win him over. Otherwise, avoid. Makes moral judgments on pieces of fiction.

I took a creative writing course with Dr. Paul. I liked him, at first. I let him know at the beginning that I had never attempted creative writing before (since I am journalism major). He seemed very understanding. I received positive comments on almost everything i turned and I never missed an assignment. I received a C- in the class.

He's soooo good. He's really passionate about what he teaches and cares about his students. He's quick to hand out praise where it's due and is very helpful outside of class.

Definitely helpful and cares about the material that he is teaching. The class is mainly discussion, so come prepared by reading. This class is a lot of work, but you learn a lot. Good teacher.

For a basic writing class this class was quite interesting. If you're into global issues this will definitely be your class. He can really get people talking, although how good your class will be will also depend a lot on your classmates since it's mostly discussion. I would definitely suggest this professor.

Dr. Paul was a pretty good teacher. Not the best, but pretty good. His classes weren't exactly riveting, but they didn't put you to sleep either. He does seem to play favorites with some people, but if you can manage to get on his good side, you'll notice a slight improvement on grades. Workload isn't too bad, seeing as his papers are only 3 pages

Dr. Paul is a really smart and interesting proffesor. He is honest in his grading, and doesnt give anything away, so make sure and put forth a strong effort in his class. He will notice if you dont put forth effort. He is the honors program head, and is usually helpfull there as well.

I too came into his Fiction Writing class with years of experience. It didn't seem to faze him at all. I am a Biology student so I was a bit worried, but I made sure to check with him on assignments and stuff. He knows I'm trying hard in his class and so far I've received A's on every assignment. Just send talk to him, he's willing to listen.

I possessed more creative writing experience than my classmates, and this seemed to nettle Dr. Paul. I got a B- on my first paper, a D on my second. I withdrew and received a refund. Today I am a college prof myself and can thank Dr. Paul for one thing: I learned how NOT to teach in the brief time I was exposed to his eccentricities.

He plays MAJOR favorites and if he doesn't like your particular style of writing, your screwed. Not helpful, when I wanted to change my topic he said don't and then when I had him for poetry said I should've looked harder for a topic in that class. His finals are bogus and I would avoid him at all costs.

DO NOT TAKE JAY PAUL!!!! I worked so hard in his poetry class and I ended up with a C. He plays favorites, and although I thought I was one of them, apparently, I am not. We had three grades in the class. The final exam was impossible cuz there were three questions and he did not tell the class what to study. He is a mean, mean, man.

I don't think you are screwed if you mess up with Dr. Paul. I did terrible on my first few assignments, but soon learned and understood what we are doing in class. Since then I've gotten decent grades and perfects on my last two papers.

He's a good prof for this class. Doesn't assign too much work or reading, which is nice since you have a HUGE paper to write. Make sure to pick topic and start researching EARLY! Write paper and presentation EARLY! Don't bore your fellow classmates!

Excellent teacher... I had him two years ago for ENGL 101. I am a Math major, but undoubtedly received something from his class. Further, I would suggest him to any English major. He is very difficult, but will REALLY prepare you for college writing.
