Comment:
Because of covid, she plans to not teach her courses, but make you teach yourself everything by doing a few readings a week (which she does not give you any info about) and then discussing something unrelated once a week in class. I do not recommend taking any classes with her. She doesn't say what she's looking for in assignments, is a hard grader

Dr Michaelis is a tough grader and condescending when you approach her. She will reply with a "that's fine, take care" when u email her about a migraine and the inability to come to class. But later fails you in participation using the missed classes as an excuse, saying that she wanted a doctor's note (which she didn't ask for).

Comment:
Dr. Michaelis might be popular in the classroom, but she has been responsible for losing someone's paper worth 55% and then using multiple excuses and her authority as the head of the department to cover up her mistake. Thats a very poor example to set for students and an easy way to discourage them.

Michaelis rocks. She's one of the smartest people I'm aware of at Mount A and is able to make the material super easy to understand. Thanks!

Michaelis is actually one of the best profs I have encountered at this school so far. Thanks to her, I went from feeling very indifferent towards politics to considering a political science major. Her lectures are genuinely engaging but definitely keep up on the readings (which are well picked and interesting as well)

Dr Michaelis turned me into a Poli Sci geek. The trade-off in lowered GPA (very hard marker) is more than worth listening to this brilliant prof discuss her academic passion. She's pretty damn cool.

Comment:
Dr. Michaelis really gets her students to think critically, reflect upon their views, and question taken for granted assumptions. She takes a very philosophical approach to poli sci and sometimes overly divulges into theory rather than real world considerations. Overall though her courses are valuable academically and otherwise!

Readings are pretty dry. Plan at least an hour per reading. She's into short reflections (page long) which are marked pretty hard (be succinct; they make you a better writer). Longer papers are normally marked easier. I'd expect at least half a letter grade less than your usual, so try to take easier courses to balance your GPA,or work your ass off

She is very good but it takes some effort to submerge yourself in the subject matter. Once you become familiarized with the subject matter and challenge your self to very critical (that is what political science is about) then you will enjoy it. Political theory is so important to understanding politicswe, anything worth understanding isn't obvious

I really appreciate how she makes an effort to get to the bottom of student questions/comments then effortlessly ties them into her lecture.MtA should have a grad program to fully utilize people like Michaelis.

I took as many of her courses as possible; do the readings if you want to understand her lectures. I went on to do grad work in political theory and blessed her every day. She demands critical thought and thoroughness. RE: complaints - not sure if profs have taken to wearing clown suits to entertain students... grow up or go to college dummies.

I was very interested in her section of the course before she attempted to convey it to us. Her ambiguity and lack of thorough explanation was harmful, and seems to mock the idea of approaching politics as a "science".

Like someone said, if you are really interested in poli sci she can be ok, but her lectures are dry. A bit unclear at times, but obviously very intelligent.

One of the silliest, most pretentious, power-tripping, airheaded profs I have EVER had. I majored in Poli. Sci at Mt. A, and will be attending Grad School in the fall, and she represents the worst of what that discipline has to offer--grand theory with no backing or facts. Awful!

subject matter is pretty boring but that's hardly her fault...she definately knows what she's talking about. i find her gestures a little distracting and sometimes the language she uses makes her unclear. she has a good sense of humor though.
