Dr. Bu is a very, very blunt professor. If you dont do well, shell say so. She requires a lot of participation in class, will call on people, and unfortunately doesnt understand technology all the best. Her tests are rough, but if you read and attend class, it wont be too bad. Just remember to participate, and follow the syllabi!

Dr. Bu is a Alma College gem. She is extremely knowledge in all areas of American and Asian history. If you take detailed notes and participate in lectures the exams will be a breeze. Her grading is very fair and her HST 105 tutor is amazing if you need help. I would encourage any student to take this class.

For 105--I am very into American history, so the class was a breeze. Lots of reading from the book, very lecture heavy, but is an amazing speaker and very clear. Challenging, but fair, & will easily get your respect. For 253--I had a few more troubles due to not being as into Asian history. Book+lecture heavy. Still, great professor. Grades: A, C

Dr. Bu is a great professor and well respected in her field. However, if you are not willing to put in the work for the class you will not do well. Listen in lectures and you will do great on the relatively easy exams. Her classes are interesting and rely on people participating in class.

Dr. Bu is an amazing professor who's lectures are always very interesting. Her accent can occasionally make some things confusing. She is very passionate about the subject and I learn a lot.

Dr. Bu is a really nice woman she just lacks a great teaching style. To pass any of her classes all you really have to do is take detailed notes during her lectures and then memorize them.

Dr. Bu's not a bad lady, and I do think she knows her subject. On the other hand, earning an A was equivalent to fact regurgitation. The neutrality of her lectures was also questionable. She brushed off a student in my class who asked about China's human rights record, and she got defensive when talking about Tiananmen Square. Hard to approach.

I couldn't believe the message posted earlier this year. It must come from a student who seldom got things right in class. I was in the same class and enjoyed Prof. Bu a great deal. She is one of my best professors at Alma College.

While she certainly seemed to know a lot about Asian history, she knew very little about US History... she either mangled facts or read verbatim from the text. Tests are 60% true/false of her OPINION on history. Definitely wouldn't recommend this course, though she might not be bad in a Chinese history class

Dr Bu is a good professor and very intelligent. Many students have difficulty because of her speaking style. She does not have a very good grasp on American humor or social cues, but is a nice woman. In her subject areas she is extremely qualified, and is one of the most published professors here, even if shes sounds "ditsy"

I had Dr. Bu back in 2003 for a class on American foreign relations. I also went to China with her. She is a very good teacher and I really enjoyed getting to know her. I do know, however, that she is not everyone's cup of tea. She can come off as a bit abrasive at times. Still, worth checking out if you have never had her.

It is a waste to get the book, even though she says you need it. I've read the first 2 chpaters and we had 4 for our first test and I got a 97%. You dont really have to read the book, just pay attention in class and take LOTS of notes and look over the key points she gives you in class. Those are exactly what are on the tests!
