Comment:
Prof. Purpura isn't a bad teacher, per se, but she does a lot of things that are confusing. I had her at UMBC for a WI course, and she required a ridiculous amount of 'responses' to the reading we had to do. She didn't like emails, she didn't use Blackboard, and she graded with checks and plusses (or minuses). Very tiring course.

Very nice lady, had many interesting classes. I definitely grew as a writer, but I feel that my grades did not show. It seemed no matter what changes I made my grades never got better. Make sure to follow her guidelines for the prompts and you'll get an A though, I guess that was my mistake.

I enjoyed this class greatly. She is passionate about what she teaches and attempts to inspire her students to live the life of a writer. I looked forward to attending her class and my writing improved greatly throughout the semester. There was a lot of work, but it isn't tedious, busy-work that I hated doing.

My favorite writing class/teacher in college so far! She gave small amounts of consistent work that were extremely manageable and easy to complete. She created an open and casual class environment and really inspired me to write. I like her teaching style and overall really enjoyed this class. You will do well if you put constant effort and try.

Such a nice lady, have never seen a professor with such a true and genuine love for her subject. Class was such a breeze there were times I wondered if I was back in the 4th grade. Keep close track of the syllabus though because I didn't and it affected my grade, but definitely take her. Class was actually easy and (gulp) fun

This was my absolute favorite class last semester, and I have no idea why people are rating Ms. P so low. She may be crazy, but INCREDIBLY entertaining. I was never bored and class flew by. Very interested in helping students, constructive criticism on papers for revision, and very flexible with topics and time limits.

I took Lia for empirical rhetoric my freshman year. She is a good source for ideas, yet she seems to play favorites. Your grade on the first paper will most like be very close your final grade, and she is resistant to letting you improve grade-wise even though you think your writing has improved substantially. Lia is most definitely a socialist.

This woman definitely is crazy. She is very strange, but you will laugh at her. A lot. She keeps you entertained. You don't have to do too much reading or homework. Just write three papers, revise them, then write a final paper. She basically tells you how to revise them. Can write about anything

I might have been inclined to say that Lia was a wonderful teacher if she were. But considering that she is not, I can only warn others not to take her class. She, like other Loyola teachers, targets certain students. If you like poetry or creative nonfiction, do not take Lia. She says everyone's writing is amazing when, obviously, they all aren't.

Please pay attention to the majority of comments posted here. Apparently Lia simply does not realize that they are negative. The fact that people only take her class because she is easy is not a compliment. It is a failure on her part. And yes, she has failed her students as a teacher. She spends more time talking about herself than teaching. Aaah!

Lia has her quirks, but don't we all! She is a fantastic source for writing tips and inspiration. If you need help, she's there. You can write about anything your heart desires and that's exactly what she wants. A fun, laid-back class.

Lia Purpura is a horrible teacher. She is not helpful at all. She talks too much and she is a conniving, corrupt individual who deserves to be fired.
