The professor knows what he is talking about and I really enjoyed the movies that were chosen as they taught the history very well. Although this course was online-asynchronous overall, the discussion boards helped keep me involved. Great class with fair assignments and a very fair, helpful, dedicated professor!

He is passionate for what he is teaching and it shows, but he is very monotonous and rambles on. It feels like he talks forever and he can take a while to get the point. You need to watch the lectures and shows up to class because everything he says is important. Take notes on what he is saying and you will be fine. No too many assignments. Easy.

He was really sweet. His lectures were a bit monotonous but he was passionate and knew his stuff. The films were all iconic and most were free. I barely did the readings and still got an A. The only things graded are weekly discussions, an essay, and the midterm and final. Pay attention in class and you'll pass.

Although he is pretty monotoned in lectures, don't fall asleep and take good notes about what he is saying. Exams and writings are open notes. He is passionate about what he talks about, we had to write a paper and I had him read my paper beforehand to see what to change, I changed some things and got a 100/100. Not all films are free you watch.

He is so cute and sweet and genuinely tries to help all of his students. The movies chosen are pretty interesting, though old, and are well discussed in class

"Film & American Society" class lets you watch generally very good old movies (nothing newer than the 1960s, at least when I took it) for academic credit. Couple of exams and couple of short papers. The prof is not the most scintillating lecturer, but he's a very nice guy and seems to be a pretty easy grader.

Comment:
This class had such a high workload-- we had only 1-2 days to read passages, view a PowerPoint, and watch a movie. He gave very succinct feedback as he didn't help clarify exactly what I did wrong and how I could fix it. If you want to do well, you need to spend COUNTLESS hours working on his assignments. One of the worst classes I've ever taken.

TAKE HIST221 ONLINE! It's definitely an easy A online, I'm not sure how it is in class. He assigned 2-3 movies each week with a discussion section of a couple paragraphs answering questions about the movie, plus the movies were interesting. For the midterm you answer 5 questions about the different movies with a couple paragraphs each.

Try to stay awake during this class. Everything that he says, write down as test material will be said during lecture and very disorganized. Not very good use of technology, needs IT in almost every class. Just about 6 textbooks and expects you to read all of them. No grading scale. Although he is very dry, he is very knowledgeable of the subject.

Lectures are very dry, and he can put you to sleep in a matter of 5 minutes. Always pauses the movies to explain what is about to happen before it actually happens. Need to watch movies outside of class and he says they are "free" but no matter where you look, they aren't free. No grading scale. These movies are old and roamed with the dinosaurs.

We watched some really great movies I found some new favorites!! I recommend emailing him if you are going to go to his office hours. He is helpful in and out of class. I really enjoyed the class and what we learned. I also recommend taking it with friends because you can watch the movie homework tg and study tg. Tests aren't bad at all. Great prof

Your grade is based on three exams and a paper. For exams, gave NO feedback whatsoever. Difficult to understand what to study for exams despite review guide given. Overall, class was frustrating and would not recommend!

Movies were interesting, but lectures before were sometimes boring and hard to follow. 2 exams and a comparative essay. Wish there were smaller assignments/homework to help grade. Has slideshows of movies. You can skip class and watch the movies later on and still do well on the exams. He is very knowledgable about the time periods/movies.

My background: Finance Major (B Student) There are 2 exams: Midterm and Final. There are 2 papers that are 4-5 pages double spaced (SUPER EASY). Don't have to go to class but attendance is 10% of your grade and there is a sign in sheet. I'd say take it its NOT bad. Wrote papers and studied the day of and got an 89 in the class.

He's a nice guy so I feel bad saying it but he is the least engaging instructor I have ever had. Obviously very knowledgeable but his lectures are the cure for insomnia. You don't have to go to class if you're willing to catch up on movies on your own time because you WILL need to watch them. We had two papers and two exams. Textbooks were futile.

Frankly, I really liked Johanningsmeier. Very nice guy and really enjoys what he teaches. Little flustered, class always runs five minutes over. Easy grader, take good notes and you won't have to read too much. 3 easy quizzes and two book reports. Offers extra credit towards the end of the semester. Sit closer to the front so you won't fall asleep.
