Comment:
Professor Scherer is really passionate about teaching oceanography, which makes the class super interesting. He brings in really cools samples of stuff that relate to the topics were learning. Also he brought in candy for the class on Halloween so he's pretty cool. There's only 4 tests throughout the semester, the only thing in the grade book.

Reed is passionate about what he teaches which makes the class really interesting. The grade is based off four tests (one is the final), pop quizzes, and 10 extra credit opportunities. Lectures are usually interesting but sometimes they are dry because the material discussed. You need to go to lecture and study hard for the tests to pass.

Very nice teacher but you have to be a good test taker. The class is based off of 4 tests only so make sure you study for them. He does not give you a study guide either. He does not give homework but gives you the opportunity for extra credit. Overall a friendly teacher but make sure you study hard for the exams or you will fail.

Scherer is an extremely intelligent guy, but a horrible professor. He wizzes through the powerpoints and gets upset when you ask to go back or to repeat. Tests are extremely difficult and there are very little points in the course aside from the tests. A lot of times he talks to you like you're stupid and should already know this stuff.

Ignore the comments below that have "coz" in them. His lectures were incredibly interesting, the use of cars to explain evolution was genius! His tests are tough, because the class is information dense. Tests are multiple choice. Do yourself a favor and make yourself a timeline of Earth's history as you learn it in class.

He is a great professor! The break down of his class (Intro to Ocean Science)is: 4 Exams, 2 easy quizzes, and 2 easy HW assignments. He gives up to 30 Extra credit points on 10 easy articles on ocean current events. There is 400 points in the class. The exams are super easy, every question is from his slides, go to class and look over notes, easy A

The lectures are interesting, but the tests were ridiculously hard, even after studying a decent amount. He expects you to memorize charts, graphs and maps that he briefly shows in his power points.

One of the better geology profs at NIU. I don't understand all these complaints about Scherer's tests being tough; if you don't study, they will be! For people later taking 322: make yourself a timeline for studying for his exams. It makes things a lot easier. His car lecture wasn't that exciting, but very innovative. Overall, great teacher!

Lets just say he teaches the class like a 400 level class instead of a 100 level class. The tests are extremely difficult. I would avoid this class!

Ok this guy may be a good researcher but NOT a GOOD TEACHER! He talked about cars in his lectures which has nothing to do with paleontology! His questions come from nowhere, its like you are playing millinaire :( bad bad bad teacher avoid him coz he is confused himself and will confuse you!

First off, this guy does not belong here as a teacher coz he talks something and gives something else in the exams. He is very unclear and gets off topic a lot. Reading textbook wont help coz he will throw stuff that you havent seen before in the exam. He makes interesting subject very booooooring!!!

I dont know where this guy gets his exams from. Doesnt tells you what he expects, not clear in his instructions. His lectures are a TOTAL waste of time coz you wont see anything like it on exams. Take it from someone who has been there...Do yourself a favor, avoid making Geol as your major at NIU.

This is way too hard of a class for a 100-level class. The tests are very hard, I LITERALLY failed every test, but I showed up everyday and did the extra-credit and I got a C. He is very helpful and kind to people that go see him during his office hours. And he actually makes the class VERY interesting.

scherer was an ok professor. he could have done a better job with lectures and made tests a little easier since it is a 100 level class. however, if you do poorly on the tests, he or the ta is always more than willing to help look over the test with you.

Awesome teacher. He is just teaching a class I wasn't interested in. Tests were hard, but if you show up to class everyday and take notes (which 90% is in his exams), you'll do fine.

This class isn't just about fish, it actually takes an in-depth look on how the ocean effects the world, not what I was expecting, but very inforamtional! I liked the class and Mr. Scherer!

Not a bad professor, but this is an INCREDIBLY boring class, and harder than it should be for a 100-level.
