He is one of the best professor I have ever had for math at JMU. He explains everything clearly in the class. I went to his office hour, and he shows me everything step by step. The homework is solvable if we go to his lecture. The tests are pretty similar to the homework. If you do his homework, an A are guaranteed. Take him. He is the best.

This class was fairly easy because I'd taken calc in high school. However, it's probably not a good choice if you have no experience. He usually explains things alright but doesn't like to do so more than once. He gets a really big attitude when you try to ask him questions which is sort of frustrating.

Does not go over too many problems during class and explains it using a lot of theories. You need to go to class everyday or you will fall behind and fail. Tests are homework problems but come out of the whole textbook making it impossible to know what is going to be on the exams. Office hours are not very helpful because he does not help well.

Comment:
Doesn't really teach theory so he doesn't expect you to know it. Test questions are just like homework problems. The final, however, is 50% of your grade. He gets mad when you ask him to clarify something or when you ask a question while he is teaching. It can be scary. He answers all homework question at the beginning of class. Not a bad class.

His class is very easy and very boring. His tests are easy and just like the homework problems. He'll go over all of the homework he assigned if you want him to, but he seems to get mad if you ask any questions about the concept. Take him for the grade, avoid him if you want something more interactive.

Calculus III can be quite difficult. Dr. Peterson's style, however, makes learning the material quite easy. He goes over many detailed examples and gives test problems just like those on homework assignments. An overall excellent professor who teaches you how to do problems and also does not jack up the difficulty level on tests. Highly recommend.

If you really love the theories behind mathematics and like to think about calculus conceptually, then Dr. Peterson might disappoint you. But chances are you don't like those things, and would rather just learn how to perform the operations needed to get an A. And for that, he's good. Take him for the grade, not the knowledge.

Comment:
This class is a pathetic joke. Peterson literally does nothing but read out of the book and write theorums WORD FOR WORD. Got an easy A on the first test without going to class. JMU students deserve better from a tenured professor on an upper level class. What a disgrace to my education.

He can be a bit salty if you ask him questions in class but he is very helpful in office hours. Tests are hard but what would you expect. This class is a big commitment, don't take this class unless you are willing to give it the effort it demands.

I had him for Math 235 during the fall 2009 semester. He explained everything he wanted you to know for tests I did a LOT of examples. Always willing to help if you had questions. Ended up with an A. Highly recommend.

Peterson is great if you're someone who goes to class every day. He goes over everything he expects you to know in great detail with lots of examples. There's about 4 tests and the material comes straight from the homework. He's kind of boring though so an early class might be rough to stay awake in. Overall I'd definitely recommend him.

I really regretted taking Peterson this semester. He's definitely one of the harder teachers in the department. It's impossible to read his handwriting and his class will put you to sleep. The class averages on his tests are around 70 which makes up almost your entire grade. If you can avoid Peterson you definitely should.

if you can read chicken scratch you can read his handwritting. tests exactly on homework but tends to make some really picky on a certain topick. not an easy class you will have to study ALOT to do well. he makes it incredibly boring and doesnt even look at you when he is talking. not very helpful in office hours either

Dr. Peterson makes going to class pretty difficult, just because the attendance is not mandatory and lectures are often very boring. Most everything was done out of the book, which had the proofs completed themselves. Very proof drive, but that was the nature of the class. Not a hard professor by any means, the class is though. It is 400 level

He is very very clear. He explains things very slowly and does a LOT of examples. I have already taken calc, but I found this class pretty easy. It's kind of misleading because he seems so easy, but gives a few semi-hard test problems, but if you study, you shouldn't have any problem at all

Gets MAD when you ask questions in class. Worst handwriting ever. Talks to the board. Tests are all writing proofs. Really bad at teaching material. Tests are fair. Take discrete math with someone else. Boring and very dry lectures. Pure evidence of why Math dept. at JMU sucks so bad b/c they are crowded with teachers like him.poor teaching quality
