Comment:

Herrick was very understanding due to COVID-19. He made exams available all day and tried to make our lives easier. The class is still very difficult but PASS sessions and reviewing the lectures and reading will help you pass. He is very passionate about microbiology. Attendance was not mandatory, but there were surprise quizzes almost every class.

Professor Herrick is a really good choice for BIO245. Although his class was easier than normal because it was online, he's still very passionate about what he teaches and is willing to help if you have any questions. Lecture's were never boring but there is a lot of information that can get kind of specific.

He is great! the best option for micro. However, I took it online and it was EASY. He does change the format for in person so it might be harder. I'm not sure what they plan to do next semester. I would still take him though! Really a gem

Such a kind, positive, wonderful professor. Waking up at 8am is a pain, but he truly made it tolerable. The lectures were informative and interesting. Online likely made the class easier than normal, as it was open book for tests, but I 100% recommend him. You will not regret it.

He is the best! Im a good student who was nervous for this class cause I heard it was hard. He makes it so manageable! If it is online, it will be easy. i do think he changes the format if it is in person. IF Online, you do not need the textbook. Even though it is an 8am it is easy! 6 tests based on 3 lectures at a time. Super easy just look at PPT

Definitely recommend Prof Herrick. Such a nice guy, and not a difficult class if you're willing to work and study for it. Clicker questions/pop quiz every class. Lets you know exactly what you need to know for the test. Not to mention he is the cutest man and canceled class for "snow" even though we were online.

Herrick is one of the BEST professors I've had at JMU. Passionate about the subject and really makes sure you understand everything. Tests are based on lecture so you NEED to go to class even though attendance isn't mandatory. Even though they aren't offering bio280 anymore, I'm pretty sure Herrick is teaching 245 in the spring, TAKE IT WITH HIM

The NICEST, SWEETEST, most AMAZING professor. Yes, his lectures can be boring at times, but he really cares about his students and wants them to understand the material given. Barely any homework. Always there if you need help. Understandable professor who wants everyone in his class to do well. Overall, amazing professor and worth it.

he's literally SO CUTE. the class is so hard you'll definitely cry yourself to sleep over it, but that's not his fault. he really cares and wants to help you. even in a class of 300, he tries to help everyone personally. he's a gem, bio 280 is not. take him for sure! however, don't take this class unless you need to because it WILL kick your butt.

It is a difficult class but Herrick is a good prof! Tests are solely based on lecture slides & his comments made in lecture. However tests are difficult because any small detail is fair game and the T/F questions on tests are extremely specific. Cool class but take good notes in lecture!

Though his class was very challenging I do believe he is the best teacher to take it with! Download his ppt's and write what he talks about in notes, this is key! Every test is based solely from power points but also from what he says so paying attention is super important. Sweet guy, let's you look at previous tests in office hours too.

He was one of the worst professors Ive ever taken. He's bias and doesn't grade everyone fairly. One person might get an A because he likes them in lab but another might not do so well for NO REASON. Quite unfortunate because I really liked him before I took this class and now Im leaving with one of the worst experiences of my college carrier. AVOID

Do not recommend. Test are hard and he is not welcoming in office hours. Anything he says in lecture is fair game for the test. He teaches like we already know the information. Me as well as many of my friends really struggled with this class.

One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Everyone seems to love Herrick but I honestly think he could do more to help his students. The tests are crazy hard with purposeful trick questions and he doesn't give any "fluff" opportunities to bring your grade up. I would study for hours and hours and still get a C on every test.

Herrick is the BEST for this course! Actually enjoyed going to lectures and learning from him. He is really funny and sweet, so it is not the kind of class you would fall asleep in. Tests are pretty straight forward and averages, for the most part, are decent. If you have to take this class, taking it with Herrick is the best choice (:

Dr. Herrick is a gem. He is knowledgable, kind, and overall a fantastic professor. He truly cares about education and about your well-being. I'm nearing the end of my degree, and am so grateful that I had the opportunity to have him as a professor and mentor.

Dr. Herrick is one of the best professors at JMU. He is so sweet, so kind and makes micro interesting. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, GO! You will not pass if you do not make every lecture unless you have a friend in the class.

Dr. Herrick was the MAN! He was seriously so amazing. Only thing difficult is that any random story he tells in class is fair game for the test but just write down EVERYTHING and youre good! Such a nice man! Take him if you get the chance!

Dr. Herrick was an amazing professor. I am so sad that this was his last semester teaching 280. I never once read the textbook so you probably don't need it. Herrick gave us a break every class because he knew how lecture heavy the class was. If you take good notes and study further in advance you will do fine in the class.
