Good, understanding, and accessible prof. He does not mind clarifying topics and is always available to chat. I had a good time in this course and am surprised to see all the complaints. Yes the course is reading heavy, but the readings are interesting. The assignments were pretty easy as well, the tests and quizzes were not. Still, a great course.

Professor Magee's assessments are completely unreasonable and it puts a lot of stress on his students. He is EXTREMELY unclear with instructions and his the entire class is very disorganized. An abornmal amount of work needs to be done in his class and lectures are taught by students.

There's no textbook but there're so many papers to read each week. A lot is taught by students in class presentations. No guidelines for any assignments; he doesn't seem to know what he wants from students. Most of the workload was left for the last three weeks. The language he uses can be confusing, especially for a non-native English speaker.

Professor Magee is not very considerate of his students. We had no major assignments for the first 7 weeks of class and everything was unloaded at the same time (a major paper and a test due the same day). We get minimal unclear instructions and what he says never matches the syllabus. This class has been very stressful due to the unclarity.

Professor Magee is a nice prof, but very disorganised and doesnt provide clear instructions for assessments. He creates extremely hard quizzes with very specific details from the long readings (so if you dont watch the random videos + multiple journal articles assigned per week, youre screwed).

Comment:
Professor Magee's lectures are very disorganized and hard to take notes/main points from, he has extremely unclear assignment instructions, and doesn't give clear and helpful advice. He gave us little work for the first 7 weeks until suddenly we have a 10-12 page paper, 5 page paper, 3 presentations, and final test all due within about a month.

Professor Magee is very disorganized when it comes to instructions and things change up until the night before they are due. He gives an immense amount of work and assigns things with little notice. If you are going to take this class be prepared to do LOTS of reading and LOTS of essays.

Prof Magee is by no means an easy grader. You have to work hard but it will reflect in your grades! As long as you do the readings and pay attention to his instructions you will do well. He answers emails very quickly and is ready to explain feedback/clarify instructions and concepts outside of class. Overall, he knows his stuff. And super nice.

inconsistent with responses and not so great feedback and does not realize the stress it leaves on students. there are also insane amounts of readings and papers that become unreasonable and inconsiderate.

I really enjoyed this class and the topics each week were quite relevant. Professor Magee always made himself available to his students and encouraged questions or concerns. The course was well-organized and the assignments were open to one's interest. If you don't do the readings you will not be able to do well in this course (as in all courses).

This course is a LOT of work. Readings are extremely long and there are many tedious weekly assignments. I honestly wouldn't have minded this course if it weren't for the prof's extremely CONFUSING lectures. It's hard to follow what he's saying and almost IMPOSSIBLE to figure out the main points of the lecture.

The topics in the class are extremely interesting and he makes an effort to keep it as relevant as possible (often includes data on COVID-19 and other current events). He is really responsive in his emails and is more than willing to guide your learning. His assessments are challenging but give you a real chance to demonstrate your understanding.

Taking his Health and Illness class during COVID w the online method. Our class is supposed to be one day a week and his lectures will be 3 hr + and have you do things on other days of the week to hand in as well. So many heavy readings that are interesting, but when taking 4 other classes reading 5 journal articles20+ pages becomes a LOT. NO THX

Prof Magee seems kind and considerate towards his students. As a person, I like him, as a professor, I do not. I found his questions to be extremely vague, purposefully difficult and poorly worded. On the first test he asked us to recall information from "a reading from week X", just really hard. The readings are heavy as well, be prepared.

Professor Magee is a genuinely nice and very knowledgeable prof. He makes an effort to learn everyone's names and encourages in-class discussion. However, his lectures are so confusing as they lack central points and he has a habit of going off an tangents that don't really relate back to what we are learning.

Readings are very long but in my opinion, important that you gain exposure to them if you will continue on to do work in sociology or other related fields. Definitely the most valuable course I've taken at u of t and there's very few evaluations that you need to keep up with. Clear lectures (that are posted), make sure to keep up with the graphs.

His readings were something I've never seen before, he gave 5 to 7 pdf's each class, they were about 20 pages each (lol). His lectures were tedious, but sometimes they were genuinely interesting. Test and exam sometimes brought up unfamiliar concepts. Attendance mandatory! Power through if you need this course, good luck!

Listen, I'm sure Magee is a nice dude. But WOW he is an awful Prof and this class was the bane of my existence. Do NOT take it. The amount you have to read is UNGODLY and the exams are killer. I like a challenge like any other hot-blooded Canadian but without the guidance of a good prof you're doomed. Take this class if u hate urself. God Speed.

Excellent prof! The readings are LONG, but interesting and easy to get through. Easy 8% for attendance. Midterm and exam are detailed, but not unreasonably so. If he went over specific aspects of a certain reading during lecture, it's likely going to be tested. One of the best classes at UofT
