This class was excellent but don't be fooled - Dr. Croco only plays a bit part. While she may be the best teacher in the GVPT department at UMD, she unfortunately only has one lecture in this series. Not a ton of work and a very informative class. A great option as an upper-level GVPT class!

Take 309C! Very easy, very interesting. Major props to Dr. Croco for setting it up -- shows great creativity and care. Q+A is mandatory! Go to it!

Easy class, as long as you carefully read the syllabus- If you don't, you will find yourself in a huge academic hole come at the end of the semester. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for honors thesis topics

201 is known to be a more difficult class, and maybe it was because of the online environment, but I felt like I understood the majority of what Professor Croco and the TAs were covering. The HW can be a little hard but the TAs discuss it in discussion sections and the reviews/powerpoints she creates for exams are really helpful. Good experience!

Comment:
This class isn't really a government class. It's more of a stat and CS class with government themed questions n examples. Croco is a nice professor, but she was honestly pretty bad at teaching all these stat concepts in lecture hall. The CS work is tedious and to do well without a background in this stuff, you'd need to put in a ton of extra time.

a really generous professor. she spells out how to do every single project/hw so its really easy to do well if you just listen to her. However, some people still find it challenging for some reason. gave so much extra credit. small curves on the tests. really funny. you don't really have to go to lecture at all

There's two side to class - easy stat lectures and hard code homework. The homework is hard and annoying. Exam was hard if you don't go to lecture but she doesn't take attendance. TA's graded harshly.

The class starts with a review of high school stats, but it get hard quickly after the first midterm. Her lectures are pretty good and she posts them online too, though it is definitely expected that you read before attending them. The TA's are super responsive to homework questions on Piazza. She grades fairly too

At first, she seemed like a really cool professor, but I soon realized that she is not a good lecturer. The first half of the semester was mostly a review from stats, so the first exam was fine. When we moved onto more complex concepts, she completely failed to explain them fully. She never said anything in lecture that helped me with the homework.

There's a fair amount of homework for this course but it's super doable. All the lectures are posted online so you don't have to ever attend in person. She's super funny and nice, her exams and grading are fair.

The Lectures, tests, and homework don't really cover the same material. Make sure to attend the discussion since that's where your 10% participation comes from. The homework wont be on the exams, but it is most of what is discussed in discussion. While the HW never covers the textbook, that IS what is covered on the exams. Pay attention to lecture.

Croco is an amazing lecturer who applied statistics to real life Government situations. However, this class is very time consuming. With practice, the database R Studio for the homework will get easier to manage, but the TA's are very approachable and help you resolve problems. The tests are very challenging but the final has a curve.

Croco is an awesome professor. She is a class act and she is seriously down to earth and will make lecture go smooth with her personality. R studio will be your worst nightmare but have faith and dont be afraid to ask her questions. Lecture isnt that important but I found myself going to every one because her tests are a bit difficult.

If you only take one GVPT class in your entire undergraduate career, then this is the one to take. You will learn how to read articles (what's important to look at, how can the findings be applied elsewhere, etc.) and HOW TO WRITE AND DESIGN YOUR OWN RESEARCH PROJECTS! This class is made even better by the fact that Dr. Croco is crazy smart.

Extremely difficult. Exams are pure memorization of intricate details in the readings. Too many complicated readings. Claims additional midterm reading (also pure memorization, regardless of what she says) was a response to a claim made on this site. Don't take unless you have a photographic memory or are only taking a couple classes. No books.

Professor Croco is incredibly knowledgeable and vested in the subject matter. I had her in 2010 for her international relations course. Her class is 'difficult' if you don't do work. If you put in the effort, it's the most rewarding class you could ever take. I would recommend this for anyone who is interested in Int'l Politics and Statistics.

Tons of readings every week. Good teacher. Difficult class. Tests are pure memorization of journal articles.
