Pong is the man. Seems very dry and boring at first but you pick up on his humor as time goes on. Really cares about the subject and about you learning. Only 4 things to get graded on and they'r all based on writing. The better you can write, the better your grade will be. Take notes and you'll be fine.

Professor Pong is mad funny. He's a good guy and really cares about his students learning the subject. KEEP UP WITH THE READINGS. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should really go and take good notes. His map projects and tests are a little daunting.

He's a really kind and funny professor. The coursework (readings!) and lecture style seems daunting at first, but he's really easygoing and just wants you learn. There does not seem much chance to earn points, but if you listen to his lectures, even if you don't read the book, you'll do well and learn a lot no problem. Tests are all essay based.

Professor knows quite a lot about this subject being Chinese himself and he's genuinely a nice guy; just not the best teacher. He tends to mumble, be unclear, and teaches in a thematic structure which can be confusing when trying to know how to combine what you've learned together. Lots of reading. Take LOTS of notes. He doesn't post power points.

Assigns a ton of readings from the textbooks but ends up picking just a few sections for the exams, so you never know what to study. Wants "out-of-the-box" interpretations of history. Boring lectures, tends to mumble, doesn't post PowerPoints so take notes. Not really a 100-level class. Try to avoid it, seriously.

notes. I was kind of mad that I studied so hard for the final yet he picks a few random terms out of 100 pages of text and makes you write essays that really aren't on the big picture. He seems to focus too much on the details.

Great guy and very knowledgeable about Chinese history but this class was very hard to get to class because I knew 99% of the time it would be one of his droning power point lectures. Due the reading on time and you'll due fine. Likes people who think outside the box a little. Map and ID projects are easy A's if you pay attention same with tests.

He knows a lot about Chinese History, but the class seems monotonous and boring, although he can make some funny jokes from time to time. Very nice professor, relatively easy grader, but VERY BORING class. If you're an IR major and need a second history class, I recommend you take something else unless you are truely interested in Chinese civ.

Good guy, but avoid this class if possible. Pong is incredibly boring and assigns more readings than most 400 classes. He grades extremely hard on the Map/ID projects, but not so hard on the test. If you do your work, you will get at least a B, if not an A.

Not an easy class, but I learned a lot. To do well in this class it takes dilligence and hard work. Lectures are a bit dry sometimes, and I wish he would put powerpoints online, but he has a good sense of humor.

Ok, so he is boring as hell, I fall asleep all the time in his class, but he is a good guy, and occasionally very funny. I find his lectures to be somewhat pointless since they cover pretty much what the worksheets he gives to take. ID Projects are time consuming, but easy, just don't do them the night before. If you know the textbook ur good to go

Be prepared to read and write! His lectures are boring and his readings tend to jump around. You can't BS in this class. Think analytically and know your facts.

If you take this class, be prepared to read alot. The prof is a nice guy but he is confusing in his order of events and his grading is odd. Go to class and know your dates cause he gets mad if you don't. The book explains better than he does chronologically so i'd encourage you to use it. Overall, his essay tests can easily be bs'ed for an A.

I've been to most of the lectures and I still have no idea what I'm supposed to be learning. He attempts to teach a history class in an achronological manner- it makes no sense. He is difficult to understand and he lacks the ability to make you interested in lectures. Not the worst, but one to be avoided if possible.

Not very good at lectures. Oowerpoint presentations aren't consistant with what he says, disorganized. Tests are hard (just essay tests with 1 question). Comes down to getting an A or F. TA when I had him graded much harder than he did. Do the readings you'll do well, I got a B+. TONS of readings, though.
