He is the absolute worst. The videos and lectures are a waste of time so just do yourself a favor and drop out. He never puts in grades so you'll likely fail anyways. The essays are on topics never discussed in class so you have to put in SO MUCH work and teach yourself just to never get a grade back. Take the class with someone else!!!!

DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! Lectures are so off topic and irrelevant there is no point listening to them. You watch videos every class that are also very pointless. The only assignments are 3-4 essays and he didn't even put my scores into Blackboard so I wasted my time even doing them. He never uses Blackboard or answers emails so good luck passing :)

Very unorganized and is not clear on expectations. The class is not a WI and I have already written 9 essays (it's only week 10). He is very nice, but does not always stick to what he says. For example, he made an extra credit essay a real assignment without even telling us. Maybe he'll be better since this was his first year with this section.

Exams are the only points really in the class. Each exam is 12+ pages written if taken home or if in class there are three essays to respond to. Prepare for exams as they are the only thing that matters. Include the 20+ key points for each essay prompt or you wont pass. He does on rants that dont make sense. This class deserves a better prof.

Professor Johnson is easily the worst professor I've had so far at CMU. His essay prompts give absolutely no guidelines or specific instructions. His lectures tend to be rambles about things unrelated to what we're actually supposed to be learning. He's a smart guy, and clearly very passionate about politics. But his class is an unstructured mess.

He obviously knew a lot about political science, but I found his lectures very difficult to follow. He never updated grades on Blackboard, so I never knew where I stood in the class. He was also very unorganized, and once taught the wrong lecture to our class. Wouldn't take again.

He's not necessarily a bad professor-- he's just incredibly strict in his expectations and tends to be hypocritical. He expects students to put in a lot more work than he does. He's smart and challenges you, but the class could be taught much better than it is.

This professor taught almost nothing. We would watch a movie every single day in class, and none of it was ever on the exams. I have had bad professors before, but no one even comes close to this level of bad. I would not recommend his courses to anyone.

Dr. Johnson is nice but should not be teaching. He seems like he has a lot of knowledge but all we do is watch videos every single day. He rarely responds to emails, even on days before exams are due, and when he does it's one word responses and doesn't answer questions. Very unclear grading criteria and presentation. Also he doesnt use blackboard.

Dr. Johnson gets a lot of bad reviews but he is actually a great professor! He is really passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. It's true that his lectures are scattered and sometimes hard to follow but if you put in a little effort and some thought you'll do just fine in the class!

Dr. Johnson is a very intelligent person who is well versed in poli sci and international relations. However, I am convinced that he doesnt know how to use a computer. Rarely replied to emails, 1 sentence replies to emails, 1 sentence feedback on discussion boards, we basically had to teach ourselves.

Professor Johnson is really nice guy, however he should not be teaching. His lectures were very unclear, and mostly consisted of rants about how awful America is. His exams are take home, however you are required to write three to four essays each of 1500-2000 words. He is very unclear about his grading criteria. Also he does not update Blackboard!

Comment:
Dr. Johnson is well-versed in his field of study. However, his lectures do not pertain to a lot exam content. Most of the actual course content has to be learned through reading the text books. The class is also extremely paper heavy. He gives an adequate amount of time to write the papers, but they are very lengthy and require a lot of research.

Dr. Johnson is the best professor I have had! Yes, he's a little scatterbrained and if you are a big notetaker he might frustrate you, but you will learn so much in this class and from him. Exams are take-home essays but require a lot of work. You must read (or at least skim) the textbooks/readings for the class to keep up.

Johnson never posted grades on Blackboard and he always made us do debates. I never really knew what to expect grading wise from him. I always came to class, listened to his lectures, watched the videos and did my homework. His take home exams were really long too. I ended up with an A in the class, which was crazy.

I've taken 4 classes in Political Science under Dr Johnson. He's tough as nails but requires you to think and explain. He's not easy and shouldn't be. I'm a conservative and couldn't respect him more for the quality teaching he provides CMU students.

Class consisted of watching videos EVERY DAY. He goes on rants that are interesting sometimes. The tests are huge take-home essay questions but if you incorporate all of the terms he lists with each question, you should get an OK grade. He's a very interesting guy but I could have learned as much about the Civil Rights Movement from my couch.

Dr. Johnson is incredibly interesting, and I learned so much about the Civil Rights Movement that I didn't know beforehand. With that said, the structure of the class is a little disheartening. He never posts grades on Blackboard, and you watch documentaries everyday. The exams are straight take home essays, which aren't easy.

I think he is a nice man, but this class was awful. We watched movies everyday. He would write random terms on the board during the movie. Then expect you to know them all when he turned the lights on. Also, you're graded on three exams are take home essays. 4-5 essays varying in 300-500 to 1,500-1,750 words each and exam only totals to 100 points.

Comment:
It wasn't a hard class, but definitely take notes and at least skim over the reading material!! Most of the time I ignored what he "taught" since all he would do was give his opinion on everything (which usually made no sense) and embarrass people. Only 5 or 6 other students showed up to class out of 53 seats available.
