Comment:
The worst professor I have taken at Marist. The lectures and labs have 0 correlation, his grading scale makes 0 sense, and he gives no explanation to either of those. His tests are take home, you'd think "nice", but you have no idea if its on what you go over in class or the labs. Terrible

Mr. Helmreich is quite a smart professor. But this does not translate into him being a good person. He was nasty from the start writing corrections on homework saying "this insults my intelligence". He is insincere and does not fit what a Marist Prof should be about. First and last prof I will review but I feel so strongly about him. Don't Take!!!!

Helmreich always throws a couple jokes into his lectures to keep you engaged. All of his labs are exercises straight from the textbook. Exams (including the final) are take home, so you can use your notes and/or the notes he provides himself. He couldn't care less if you skip class or not, but beware, you might be lost as a result. Fun class.

Helmreich is a very funny and charismatic guy. He is very smart and always is available for help either via email or in his office. The textbook is used for the labs and there are a few homework assignments that are dropped if you do well enough on the final. There were two exams but they were take home so we were able to use our notes.

Was very easy at the start but got more difficult. 3 exams and drops the lowest one and a final at the end. Some exams will be hard because you won't know how he will set it up since in stats he doesn't allow calculators and laptops on exams so you will be like "So what will be on the exam" Got a B in class. A lot of HW but not very hard.

i personally enjoyed this class. the class meets 4 days a week. 2 of the days are your standard lectures, while the other 2 are practice problem sessions where you can ask the professor when you're stuck. Also the questions on the test are similar to the ones you do in the practice problem sessions. his grading system makes room for a bad day or 2

Helmreich is so passionate about statistics and passes that passion onto his students! He made the class exciting and engaging. We had no exams. Our grade is solely based on problem sets. What he wanted though was not clearly stated in the problem sets; I suggest taking a lot of notes to mimic what he does in class on your problem sets!

Although I think he is a decent teacher, I would not recommend taking stats with him. He uses a computer program for all of the homework...you're required to learn how to type code if you want to pass the homework. His tests (obviously) can't use the program so they aren't relevant to what he teaches in class.

I thought this guy was a good teacher, but the class was hard. He explained things pretty clearly and I always understood what he was saying, but discrete math is just a difficult subject.

For any class he teaches, Helmreich moves very fast during class and it's easy to fall behind. He really knows his stuff though and he's a great guy. His tests aren't crazy and he's very generous with partial credit. Calc homework is all online and helpful. Don't buy the textbook! You won't use it and you get a digital version buying online access.

Very nice and helpful professor. Uses class time effectively by providing the information and many examples to help. Has a very generous grading policy and very straightforward exams. Made me enjoy math again. If you do the homework and don't skip class, you will be fine.

If you have never taken Calculus and aren't very good at teaching yourself math, PLEASE do yourself a favor and avoid taking Helmreich. He grades VERY tough on Tests but the material is on what he says its going to be on. He drops a test grade, but again... if you haven't taken Calculus before do NOT take him.

I did fail Helmreich, but retook the same course in the spring with McGovern and received an A-. Helreich does not teach to people who never took Calc before. If you took Calcin H.S then he might be okay for you. DO NOT TAKE him if you never took calc I before.

Great teacher to have for statistics. He goes over the material well and uses many examples in class to help explain. Grading is very generous, as he drops your lowest test grade and gives partial credit on exams. Sometimes he may seem to move quickly through more difficult material, but he's helpful and willing to answer questions during class.

Not a good teacher if you never took Calculus before. Goes Rather quick and just lectures without many questions. Had to teach myself most of the subject, which was very stressful. Did not do any hands on learning until the end, which helped a lot. Too bad he does not understand how to teach like that all year. Would NOT recommend.

Prof Helmreich is a really good guy, and while his teaching methods may work for some people, they did not work for me at all. I got a tutor for the final because I could not understand his methods. However, if your grade on the final is better than your course grade, you get that grade, and he drops your lowest test and 4 lowest homework scores.

He's awkward at times, but you learn to enjoy class. I'm currently taking my second class with him because his tests are very straightforward and his grading system is there to help you. He drops enough grades to account for a bad day here or there and you will always have a chance at an A, even if you fail every test except the final.
