Comment:
His lectures are a little hard to follow as he's so enthusiastic about the course he gets side tracked. His jokes are bad but that makes them more funny. Show up, listen and you'll pass. Easy tests, easy grader, caring and helpful. Highly recommend.

Schipper is very care-free in his teaching. Easy grader and overall a nice guy. He doesn't like the internet so unless you have a friend in the class, you'll have to go to his overly long lectures just to know the next assessment. If you plan on putting in work, the course is an easy A for sure. Three novels, can get an A without reading

Comment:
Grading criteria was unclear. I found it difficult to believe Beowulf was appropriate for 1090. Background as Old English prof shows through obscure references and love of recitation. Assignments were fair and extensions lenient. Low attendance in classes led to poor morale. Lectures were long tangential rambles.

Prof Schipper is a nightmare to me. If you went to class on tuesdays and thursdays, 75 minutes felt like 5 days. He gives out 3 books (all of which are extremely boring) and grades stupidly. He asks for 7 journals every 2 weeks which I found hard to do because of other courses. He also expects the books to be done before he tells you to start them.

He often discusses things that wont be on the test and will often stray from the syllabus and make changes to the course i.e. make a take home test an in class exam and change the date of the test without notice. Focus on reading the text book.

A very knowledgeable and respectable man. Makes things very clear although tends to not follow class plans as they're stated at the beginning of the year.

Tends to ramble, and he's a bit disorganized. But he's really friendly and marks well. His reading quizzes are easy, and tests are relatively easy as well. Enjoyed taking his class.

Schipper is a really friendly guy. He does tend to ramble a bit, but it's nice when doing Chaucer to hear some things connected with it, not necessarily directly focused on Canterbury Tales and such. This man has a passion for Chaucer, so you can feel that. Schipper is very good one-on-one, and an understanding prof, as long as you put in work!

Uses mystery novels for this course. Short quiz on each novel . Three out of class essays and one in class. Lectures are boring, and he once told us he don't give higher than 90s to anyone. But I liked the course.

I've had Dr. Schipper three times (3500, 4500, and 4999). I took Old English and became fascinated with the subject. Yes, he is a bit scatter-brained, as many have noted, but if you go to him for help, he will do his best to help you out. The quizzes and class participation in 3500 are also helpful as they force you to learn the material.

He's so funny and weird. It is a hard course and challenging but he makes it so much fun. His finals are usually take home.

Such a small percentage of what Schipper talks about in class is relevant to anything. You'll only be reading detective novels but if you can figure out what the essay questions are going to be and prepare for them he'll mark it very fairly. However, he'll give you zero feedback.

I didn't enjoy the class much (Old English; how exciting can it be?) but Dr. Schipper was a pretty decent prof. Yes, he's disorganized and expects participation, but he's also funny in a weird way and gives fairly easy quizzes. Plus it happens to be a required course, so English Honours majors have to make do!

One of the best professors I've had yet at the University. I had virtually no interest in English as a course until I had this man. He was extremely helpful, an easy marker and an engaging lecturer.

Great professor. While a hard marker and has slightly weird tendency, he's a really nice guy and gets the job down. Anyone who puts him down clearly are just bitter about a terrible mark. I didn't even do all that well but he helped me a lot when I asked for it.

Dr. Schipper does tend to ramble during lectures, but that doesn't make him a bad professor. He has fair expectations, is approachable if you have questions, and is a very nice person in general. Definitely take a course or two with him if you enjoy medieval literature - you'll end up appreciating it all the more. I highly recommend Chaucer (3600).

Dr. Schipper is a really nice man, but he's not a good professor. He is scatter-brained and has a tendency to ramble on about topics that have nothing to do with the course. That being said, he is a lenient marker and is easy to get along with. The courses he teaches (3500/01 and 3600) are required, so honours students can't avoid him anyway.

he is a good professor but kind of unpredicable .he really is all over the place in lectures like many have said before me. To be honest he sort of scares me- my mark in his hands. i knew at the end of the last course that i would would not want to take another one with him. Maybe really laid-back?
