Terry is smart, and very kind. DO NOT MISS HIS CLASS THOUGH. That will severely bring down your mark. He knows what good writing is and will definitely respect you if you're intelligent. Over all, a very good class.

Terry was a fantastic teacher. I would recommend him for anyone taking a creative writing class. He had helpful suggestions for people at every level of development in our class (there was a wide range.) This was the one class I looked forward to going to all term.

Terry was by far my favourite prof this semester. I learned a lot from him, partially because he is very helpful and encouraging. He wants you to do well and is willing to help you get there. One of the most insightful men I have ever met. The workshop was a fun and educational place. I highly recommend the class.

Great prof. Was really knowledgeable and approachable. Great at mediating the usual tensions of a workshop class, possibly one of the best.

I took Terry's advanced prose class a few years ago. He's an excellent teacher with a lot of insight. You'll get good and useful constructive advice and he always gives positive feedback. You have to do rewrites for class critique - it's required. I went to visit him this year and he remembered my writing. Impressive.

It might just be me, because everyone else loved Terry, but I hated this class. There's no portfolio, which means you end up being marked on first drafts. His comments are insightful, but it's sometimes hard to understand what he's saying, or what his advice really is. He almost never offers positive feedback, which I found discouraging.

Byrnes is an extremely sensitive and kind man. Even if you have a difficult time in his class he will do his best to explain things. He will never, ever pick on you or make you feel dumb. He is a good person.

He knows his stuff and he can teach it. His short fiction creative writing class is excellent and his feedback is really excellent. I can concretely feel my abilities are improving. One warning though: you only start writing in 2nd semester. Sometimes he has sentences that don't really make any sense but he's always willing to explain himself.

Articulate, fair, hyper-observant, very smart and deliberate. Less intimidating when he's one-on-one -- in fact, downright sweet. An interesting guy. If you are experimenting in writing without conviction or commitment, this course will be hard for you.

There were moments in the class where I truly felt the light go on - and it was thanks to Terry's insight. He's the best teacher I've ever had. You below who is judging his photography - how is that relevant to a creative writing class?

I strongly disagree. I found him extremely fair, approachable, and thought he had penetrating insight into fiction. He is a great editor. He is listed as a popular prof in Macleans university special, and rightly so!

a nice man. wishy washy is right. He is objective in his critiquing, wheareas many creative writing profs only appreciate works that are similar to their liking.
