I had Dr Littlefield for 701 and 752, basically the exact same course. He never handed back my papers in either class. He like to talk all the time and tell the class what we don't know. He likes to assign books that he can rip apart to look smart.

Nice guy and an easy .' you will learn more by reading the books on your own. I had hoped to learn some current historiography, but he has not kept up with the field. It was also apparent Littlefield does not know much at all about the literature dealing with Caribbean, Latin American, or Atlantic history whenever he brought it up .

Dr. Littlfield is very smart, but he can't be bothered by grad students. I got an A but have no idea why. I asked for my paper back several times and he returned it. It's a shame because he could do so much more. I learned more about Early American history and US slavery during my undergrad classes. Take Holton, Maskiell, or Childs

Dr. Littlefield is very smart, and I enjoyed talking with him in person. He is not that effective at running a grad seminar, grading papers, returning papers, or returning email.

I had him for 752 and 701--pretty much the same. Interesting readings, but he is not really ino teaching histrical skills. Like the others wo have commented, I never got my paper back in either class so not sure why I got an A--but I did.

Another overpaid worthless tenured professor at USC... After 4 years at USC, this is the only one of 2 professors I throughly despise. His class consists of his boring monotone lecutres, two essay tests (that you only have 50 mins to complete) & one paper on a movie I had to order all the way from Canada. DO NOT take this class unless you have too

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Littlefield is extremely boring, his voice is monotone and his points are unclear. You have to read every book assigned and a lot of the textbook. Grading is very harsh as well. This class was an extremely annoying burden.I wish I had taken it at midlands tech.

Unless you have time to devote to this class, do not take it. Its not mandatory to attend class but his lectures are necessary for the test. Two exams, one five page paper, two awful books. he is very knowlegable but scattered, you will learn alot but it is not an easy A class.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. As a history major I love the subject but Dr. Littlefield managed to make me hate it. The grading is extremely harsh, I've taken 300 hist. level courses before and thought this is my hardest class so far. I feel bad but he is extremely boring and arrogant.

he's got a lot of interesting things to say but him voice can make you drift off. you have to read the book because a lot of the quizes have nothing to do with lecture. I was very mad when he skipped the revolutionary war completely. only take if you are very interested in the subject.

Professor Littlefield class is hard. He wants you to read hsi books and only discuss the history that took place in South Carolina. If yo can aviod taking the man class. I don't see why USC pays this man to teach

I love history but Littlefield managed to make the class extremely boring. Aside from forcing you to read his own book, the class lectures weren't all that great. He seems to like to talk about only South Carolina and about his book. If you have a choice, don't take this class.

His class is very boring. HE overall is a very nice man though. I hated all the reading we had to do. I don't think I ever passed a weekly quiz but I did really good on the writing assignments and final to end up with a B. I hated reading the book Slaves and Rice- it was sooo boring. This class is a lot of work.

Never quite figured Dr.Littlefield out.At first I thought he was clever, but as time went on,I thought it might be arrogance.Boring lectures. Sometimes he's funny, but he mumbles at times too,and that's frustrating.TONS of reading.I skipped class the last half of the semester and came out w/a C,for which I felt grateful.Avoid unless you love history.

I like history but this class can be challenging! The lectures are boring but as long as you try you will do well! I came out with a B and he said at the beginning that most people fail the class! and i didnt put to much effort into it the exams are essays but as long as you study the topics you will be fine

Definitely a bad teacher. Found out about this site too late, so had to take him. Unfriendly, not at all helpful; sends you to the TA. Lectures are unclear & hard to follow; tests & essays extremely hard. Be prepared for a lot of reading, some of it irrelevant and unnecessary. Avoid him if you can for this class; don't take Joyner for TA either.

This class was so hard. The professor didnt explain anything. His lectures consisted of him trying to make jokes to get us to actually pay attention. The TA wasnt any help either. I recommend that you shouldnt take this class unless you absolutely have too. If there is an opening with the other professor, take it!

Boring lectures and a lot of REALLY boring reading. Two essay tests that usually don't coincide with the study guide. I don't recommend unless you really love history.
