She is nice but makes you work for the grade. You have to do well on the reading worksheets otherwise you will not pass. You can reach her outside of class but she does not respond with much which I think is out of her being busy. She is really nice and cares about what she does- it is evident she is knowledgeable on her subject. I really liked her

Ms. Eck's class was one of my favorites this year as she made her lectures interesting and the readings doable. You have a quiz every week on the lectures which are pretty hard but you have 3 essays and a final essay which were not graded harshly for me. This class is great if you want to put in a little extra work to get more out of it.

Good choice for this class. A quiz every week, 3 essays and a final essay instead of exam. Not too hard, the material is interesting and the essays aren't too bad. Overall, good teacher and class.

It's a lot of work for a gen-ed and her quizzes are really hard even if you do the readings. Personally as a prof she's a nice person and want's you to succeed but its definitely not a low maintenance class. You're grade is based off of 3 essays and a final essay and 9 quizzes. Just be prepared for about 1-2 hrs of reading, documentaries, +tedtalk

Professor Eck is a great professor. The quizzes are tough. If you attend office hours and go to the discussion groups, you'll most likely get better grades on them. There are 3 short essays that are graded pretty easily. The Final is a 3-page paper (haven't written it yet.) Very caring and kind professor. You just need to put in the effort.

Mrs. Eck makes this class much harder than it needs to be. It's a Gened class and I'd say a majority of the class is taking it for that reason. Yet she treats it like we are all Sociology majors. The quizzes for her online class are absurdly hard, I feel like most of the information isn't even brought up in lecture. 3, 1 page papers in the class .

Eck is a passionate teacher who has interesting lectures. HOWEVER she expects way too much out of her students for a GenEd class. I would consider myself a good student and the Quizzes are the hardest thing Ive ever taken. Material on quizzes was never taught. Will rank your grade. Should not be this difficult for a GenEd. Very disappointed.

Dr. Eck has been my favorite professor at James Madison. Her lectures are extremely interesting, so even though attendance is not mandatory you will want to be there. She is very organized and explains up front what she expects from you. There are only 10 graded items in this class and 80% of your final grade is based on 3 tests so beware of that.

Dr. Eck is by far the best professor that I have had at JMU. She is extremely knowledgable in the subject and the class will make you think of your everyday life a lot differently. Although the class could be difficult at times, as long as you take good notes, attend class, and study well, you'll be fine.

She is a really nice person but I studied A LOT for this class and I found it exceptionally hard, but I am also not that good at this kind of stuff. We read about a chapter a week once the semester gets going and it's not too bad but you have to take detailed notes. There are three exams, MC and OR, and the final is not cumulative which is nice.

Favorite JMU professors I've ever had! Her lectures are really engaging and she goes pretty slow (writes the important stuff on the board). Short answer part of the test requires reading the book. MC part is pretty easy if you go to class. There's a final paper but it's pretty easy along with noncumulative final. Take her if you can!

Though I enjoyed the class, a majority of the final grade is tests. If you are a good student, but not a good test taker, I do not recommend this course. She truly wants the best for her students and has plenty of office hours. However, as someone who usually passes classes with As, I did not enjoy this class. The material is fun, but hard to grasp

What an AMAZING teacher! Shes absolutely lovely. A professor who knows the material, cares about her students and her field of study?? Youd be a FOOL to pass her up. The readings are GRADED graded though so do take those seriously lol. Attendance is not required but Id HIGHLY encouraged. Super interesting stuff. Very happy I took her.

I loved Professor Eck. She's an amazing prof and she really cares about what she's teaching. Sociology is a hard topic in general but Beth really helps you and cares about your grade. You do have to read a lot for this class but its so interesting and you'll want to go to class every time. 2 tests and the final. Part of the final is take home essay

Best class I have ever taken. As long as you take good notes and do the reading, the test are easy multiple choice. Dr. Eck knows her stuff and explains things slowly and simply. You can get away with skipping a few lectures but you honestly won't want to because it is super laid back and interesting. She is super organized, no surprises.

Dr. Eck is an amazing professor and really knows what she is talking about. She made the lectures interesting and wasn't afraid to ask the class questions either. There is a decent amount of readings but you need to do them in order to pass the tests. You also might get by skipping one or two classes but the tests are also based off of lecture.

I took Eck for Sociology of the family, and she made you work for anything you did. At first, I felt like I wasn't do the best because she was an extremely strict grader. However, I went to her office hours and she was willing to help. After that I really got the hang of her class and learned a lot too.

For sure one of my favorite professors. She is so knowledgeable and a very fair professor. She gives a lot of reading but the reading isn't pointless, and you won't pass the tests without the reading. Attendance isn't required but the lectures are very important. You'll be fine if you miss a day or two. 10/10 recommend.

Dr. Eck is passionate about sociology and if you are into that, then this class will be great for you. Her teaching style is fine, but her grading is too harsh for a general education professor. For students who are used to getting A's in religion, philosophy, etc. this is not going to be as easy. Good professor, but expects too much for gen ed.

Probably one of the most knowledgeable professors at JMU. Her lectures were very informative and she always tried to keep them interesting. If you are trying to raise your GPA, DO NOT take this class. She will admit that if you do all of the readings and come to every class you will get a C on the tests. With only 3 tests this class is ROUGH.
