Ian is brilliant! He knows so much about everything and isn't afraid to digress from lecture material if he finds it helpful for his student's understanding of a specific text. Definitely be prepared to read all of the 6 plays and have them finished the day he begins to teach them. I would talk another course with him.

I really do respect Ian as a prof. He truly knows his stuff and is passionate. Sadly, he tends to go on rants that have nothing to do with the class. You will hear tons about the Simpsons and American politics. The course is rather dry due to his endless monologues in class. His marking does seem a little unfair at times too. Great person though!

Comment:
Ian has some very depressing, hot takes on literature and he often gives uninspiring readings that make it difficult to analyze any given text further. He has a sense of humor but frankly he expects his class to be on a much higher level than they are, he marks participation, but is extremely eager to shoot you down in class.

Ian is a really good prof! He makes you read a lot but he definitely makes sure you understand the material and is very helpful and wants you to succeed! He's a really nice prof and really helps especially if you use his office hours.

Requires we do lots of reading and the texts chosen are complicated and hard to understand. For two essays students have the option to choose their own rhetorical article instead of a story from the textbook. Ian is a fair marker, I used to struggle with English but I improved a lot with Engl 1900.

McAdam's lectures are mesmerizing. He is absolutely brilliant, but manages to make his brilliance accessible to your average university student through his real world applications and hilarious sense of humour. You will be required to read 6 Shakespeare plays, and be able to place & interpret passages in their proper context come exam time.

Really chill class, all you had to do was read the story, poem, etc. before class and then take notes and pay attention throughout the lecture. There were three essays and the final was three essays within three hours handwritten so be prepared for that. A little bit of a hard marker but overall I enjoyed the class.

English is my best subject but Ian made me hate it. I considered switching majors after taking this class with him. Only graded us on attendance, participation and three essays.

I liked McAdam's sense of humour and his lectures were, mostly, easy to follow, however he goes off on tangents quite a bit and got the class off schedule, leading to three very long email lectures over the break. Besides that, I think he is a fair professor and cares about his students and if they are having outside issues!

Professor McAdam is awesome. He might seem fairly daunting at first but he's a surprisingly fun guy. Lectures are for the most part entertaining at the least, even though not everyone will find them exciting. Decently hard marker, nothing crazy though. If you do your readings and attend class, the essays should be a breeze. Definitely recommended.

He's been doing this for 20+ years, so he definitely knows what he's talking about. His course is pretty clear-cut, but I wasn't a fan of his lengthy lectures. He uses way too many Freud, Bible, and Taylor Swift references. Lectures are basically him talking about his sole interpretation of the text even though participation counts. Not a big fan.

He is super funny and makes lectures interesting! Definitely not an easy course though! There is so much reading assigned and if you skip class you will not do well on the final exam!

This class was a huge step up from high school English classes. Ian is funny, makes class interesting and makes all the stories very clear. He explains well and has discussions on the readings instead of making you analyze everything. Only three essays and a final. Take notes and the essays are easy enough. Final was pretty tough - had three parts.

My fave prof. He marks hard and has favourite themes that he likes to find in EVERY work, but he listens to and respects other ideas. He is very dramatic, sarcastic, and rarely serious, so his lectures are hilarious. He's willing to point out weak points of the works he teaches instead of worshiping every reading he assigns, which is refreshing.

Interesting ideas and an fair marker. Not very helpful unless you go to his office hours which are when most people would have other classes. Moves very fast sometimes too fast. Gets distracted easily. Expects too much from a first year student.

Ian is the best English prof, hands down. I've taken every one of his classes. If you don't enjoy English and want an easy A, this is not the prof for you, but if you love to read and learn he will teach you more than you'll ever learn in any other class.

Comment:
Ian's pedagogy is based upon his personal interpretations of texts, and your obligation to abide by these interpretations. He is pedantic and tangential, and willing to walk out on a class if they do not complete the readings. He expects you to have an exorbitant amount of background knowledge before the class commences. I would avoid if possible.

LOVED HIS CLASS! He's hilarious and isn't afraid to say what's on his mind. His lectures are enlightening and interesting, and he tries to engage student opinion. Gives great pointers and advice on how to approach essays. Fair marker and gives hints for he final exam.

Comment:
Ian comes across as arrogant and his interpretations of the text are almost always freudian. He is marks very fairly and is very helpful as well as long as you attend class and listen you should be good.
