Comment:
Do NOT take ENGL217 with professor Feng. He makes film so unenjoyable and gives a ton of work. He gives take-home assignments (essays) and grades so harshly - 10pts off for 2 days late. He just lectures the whole class and expects you to watch the movies on your own. Way too hard and time-consuming for an elective and not worth it at all!!!

Feng was ok. This class was painfully boring, maybe 2 post-60s movies the whole semester. It's not a history class, so I was looking forward to analyzing some avant garde or modern award-winners... but no, just slow paced black and whites. He did give us a lot of time off to account for zoom fatigue, which was nice. Takes FOREV to grade. Don't take

Class is boring unless you are into film HISTORY. A majority of the movies are from the 1940s and are therefore black and white. The exams are not at all about what he teaches in class. There is no extra credit options to improve your grade.

Prof. Feng is a funny guy and very passionate about film. The films are almost exclusively black and white. There were two papers, which he graded kind of harshly. The exams were also kind of difficult, he had to curve them. Idk how people said they passed without coming to class bc attendance is mandatory and if you don't come, you'll be lost.

I skipped every single class throughout the semester and still ended up with an acceptable D-. He covered the material in class very well, from what I've heard.

Professor Feng is an incredibly well-read professor, and you can tell that he loves film. He doesn't pander to his class and treats you as adults in your responsibility as well as lectures. His class is interesting, but expect older films primarily black and white. These may not seem immediately appealing, but once you give them a chance they shine

Intro to Film was a pretty interesting class. Professor Feng really knows his stuff. He's a funny and nice guy. The topics in the class were difficult and I didn't quite like how we got quizzed on stuff before he'd give a lecture on it (it was based off of the reading assignment). He was also a tough grader when it came to the papers.

I skipped 50% of the classes and still wound up with a C-. He goes overboard on assigning 30+ pages of reading homework EVERY WEEK! 2 papers, a writing midterm and exam, plus participation!

You'll end up sighing so many times in this class, whether it be from the boring black and white movies or waiting for Feng to get his extremely jumbled thoughts together. While the class is pretty easy, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. No papers to write so that's a plus, and the two projects are easy Otherwise, prepare for very unclear lectures

Professor Feng is not a bad teacher, this class is just terrible. Unless you LOVE black and white movies and their history, you will hate this class. The movies are unbelievably boring, and all you do in class is take notes from his power points. Exams are really tough so DO NOT take if you're only looking for an easy A.

It not a terrible class, it's just really confusing. He tries to explain the SUPER confusing articles in a more clear way, but it doesn't always work. He's not bad, but class does get a little tedious when you don't understand anything he's talking about.

He knows what he's talking about, but does not know how to make it clear to students. The articles he assigns make no sense and his discussions about them are not clear. He goes off on tangents, too. His tests are hard, especially since his lectures are hard to follow. I did not learn a lot in this class. He's nice, but can't teach.

Some of the movies he shows, are sooo incredibly boring, I would've rather have taken a nap in my own bed. Exams are based on the movies and powerpoints, which are not posted online, wouldn't even email me just one class lecture so I could attend a family emergency. No written papers for an ENGL class which is nice. Not a bad Breadth A

Reading material is boring and hard to comprehend. There is no variety in assignments, and class discussions are hard to follow because they are based on incomprehensible articles that students need to print every week to read. He grades pretty tough but gives opportunities to rewrite papers. Who has time for that though?

A nice enough guy, but definitely take Leitch or Ross instead, if possible. I had to waste a lot of time taking notes on articles I didn't understand and sitting through class was painful at times. The guy can't lead a discussion to save his life. You will watch some good movies, though.

If you take film theory with him, be prepared to read tons of pointless articles that make you hate movies. Also, the articles make no sense. Then he will make you take notes on them, which will take you about 6 hours a week, all for a grade of a check, or check minus. He is a smart funny guy in lectures though.

Prof. Feng definitely knows what he's talking about. Some of the films are boring, but the discussions after help clarify. Attendance is mandatory and you have some quizzes on book readings, so it's important to finish those on time. The 3 papers aren't too bad, and he'll help you if you have any trouble. Overall the class was fun and interesting!
