Avoid if you are a non English/non CHASS major!! Seems resentful towards STEM students. Grades undergrad papers like they are graduate papers. Asked questions for clarification on my essays and told me I was being disrespectful of his class and trying to cheat (NOT true at all). Worked very hard but grade didnt reflect that at all. Avoid!

He is an awesome professor. He will push you to grow. He is engaging, witty, caring, brilliant, and an excellent orator. Just make sure you have all your reading done; if you fall behind, catching up can be brutal.

I've taken two graduate classes with Thompson so far, and they've both been a delight. He was the first person to really make me feel welcome at NCSU. This is on top of working with me throughout the year on my writing and teaching me so many new things. The classes are a lot of work, but definitely worth it if you're interested in learning.

Too basic to be teaching grad-level classes. Doesn't have a clear grasp of essay-writing or teaching. Doesn't know how to teach a seminar class or facilitate conversation about texts. Grades arbitrarily--uses grades to shock the students rather than accurately give students feedback. Is belittling. Would not recommend this course at all.

Thompson is a pretty cool and funny guy. Beware of reading quizzes every class on the books. However, He grades very reasonably on tests and quizzes, but is a little harsher on the essays. He does a really good job of making the readings applicable to modern life which makes lectures more interesting.

Reading quizzes everyday, but it helped me stay on top of the workload. He's a really nice and funny guy, and he makes literary analysis interesting. His writing workshops will make you a better writer across the board. His midterm and final consist of identifying 10 passages then analyzing 4 of them. Not the easiest, but definitely one of the best

Avoid. Bullies students in class, calls on people randomly (is this high school?), and forces us to use his own website (why can't he use Moodle like everyone else?). His interpretations of texts are VERY surface-level and if you're an English major these shallow interpretations will disappoint you.

I really enjoyed his class! He has a very dry sense of humor but definitely is able to make an english class interesting. You have to do your reading in order to do well because he gives a quiz about every class but they are short and simple. He is a tough grader but he really wants his students to do well and will work with you.

Super helpful, I would've never understood half the material without his explanations. He's really chill but cares a lot about students and making sure they understand. As annoying as the daily quizzes are, it made me read and it was an easy way to get 100's (only 4 questions each). I will definitely take another class from him.

I admit I hate English classes and especially poetry and if you are like me DO NOT take this class! Thompson is entertaining and a really cool guy but he is the Michael Jordan of poetry and takes it so seriously that he can't help but make the class WAY harder than a 200 level course should be. I repeat...DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HATE LIT.

Not the best teacher I've ever had, but definitely not a bad one. A fairly low-key 300 level English class. Stay on top of the readings (lots of 3 question quizzes) and you'll do fine. He does a lot of discussion based teaching, so prepare to talk. Fair grader when it comes to essays, and the exams weren't too hard. An okay teacher.

He has a very strict grading criteria, and very restrictive essays. He doesn't always explain what he wasn't too well, or leave room for creativity or anything that diverges from his viewpoints.

Put it like this, I attended class the first day and it was so boring and talked so low that I had to drop it that same day. Very dry, and used the word "like" 100+ times in a 50-minute class, and drove me crazy. Dropped him like a bad habit.

Wow, I took a class from him the year before I went to law school(11 yrs ago). It was the most difficult class at NCSU next to Dr. Holly's Chaucer. That said, Lit Crit was hard. Dr. Thompson has a NPR sense of humor. He was awesome. The only caveat: if you are trying to get into a competitve grad school program, his course might drag your GPA down.

Very passionate about the subject and definitely knows his stuff. He invites discussion, and advocates looking at the text in different ways. Dry sense of humor and very easy-going. Take him if you're serious about literature.

If this is the same Thompson who taught me literary theory, I thought he was a great guy just working with some heavy material.
