Comment:
Prof Howard is really passionate about history but his lectures were so confusing. The tests and papers had nothing to do with the lectures and the rubrics/reviews were not clear at all. He graded really tough on essays and papers. You should read all the books and take a lot of notes in class if you want to understand anything thats going on.

While interesting in class, he is a hard grader with unclear specifications for papers. Tests are fine if you attend class regularly, but trying to write the papers even after attending every class, doing the readings, and talking with him outside of class was extremely hard.

Howard is one TOUGH grader. But his passion for history and his interesting lectures make up for it. Make sure to visit him outside of class--helps a lot. Clear expectations for papers and exams. 2 midterms and one final. Would take again!

Professor Howard is one of the hardest, unclear professors I have had so far in college. Aside from being unclear, he is an EXTREMELY hard grader. If you mess up a little section of an essay for a test, you will be graded down immensely for it even if you did great on the other parts of the test. I would not to take this class/prof ever again!!

I mean, I needed this class to be a full time student and it was all the registrar would give me. It was okay, I learned tons of interesting facts, but every day was something new. Unclear connections from lecture to lecture almost like he would just wake up and decide what to talk about that day. This lecture style led to very random tests...

Don't take this prof. DON'T DO IT! Even if it's the perfect fit for your schedule. The damage to your GPA is not worth it. Profesor Howard is extremely confusing and a tough grader. Get ready to read five long books and never hear them discussed in class. Get ready to write ridiculous papers on n material never discussed in class either.

Extremely tough grader. Study ahead of time for tests, at least 2-3 days. Test points are unevenly distributed in tests, imo. First two midterms, 30% of the grade is the map (in a CONFUSING layout). On the final, 70% of the grade is two essays. Both sections-essays and maps- are difficult. Take notes. A ton of reading. Feels like a 500 level class.

Professor Howard is, to date, the toughest and most confusing professor I have had. His lectures are interesting and insightful, but his tests are the nail in the coffin. Not only is the large majority of the test material not discussed in class, but the review sheets are not helpful at all.

Get ready to read, and get all the books. Reasonable grader but expects you to grow. Has an exceptional perception for students BS and students pondering. Go in ready to learn and having read what you can and he will help with the rest. His classes have been some of the best at Calvin and the most rewarding but he will certainly make you work

I absolutely adore Professor Howard. He's the reason why I changed my major from Pre-Medicine to History. A lot of people say his class is hard and the papers are harder, but what he really wants you to do is ask question instead of answering them. He wants you to be as passionate about history as he is. He reignited my love for history...

Doug Howard is a fantastic professor! He is brilliant, so sometimes he will go over your head, but he is very willing to clarify if you are confused. A down side: he can be a bit absent-minded. Generally, though, he is funny, charismatic, very excited about the material he teaches, and very willing to meet to discuss classwork or papers. Great guy!

Didn't start off with a good vibe in this class because on the first day of class he laughed at my opinion about the validity of the Bible. When I ask for help, I just get more confused. I was in the top 10 of my class in HS, but didn't do very well in this class at all. Most of test grade is opinionated essays, and he never likes mine.

Great Professor! Loves showing pictures. The readings can be quite time consuming, but class time flies by! It's a great class in which you always learn! He can be a strict grader on the papers but if you fix what he tells you to, you will be fine. Sometimes lenient on the dates. :)

Like him a lot, came in dreading the class but it ended up being my favorite class of the semester. Very approachable, and can answer questions you had after class. FUNNY and you literally learn something new everyday. I would recommend this class to anyone.

Extremely hard class. The lecture, book work, and tests all seemed to be three separate areas of study. He is extremely approachable and is very intellectual. I went into his office several times for each paper to see if I was on the right track. Do that and you'll get a decent grade. Hard but a nice guy

I would recommend not taking P. Howard. I was told that I wrote an fine paper, but he didn't like it so I got a C. He's is approachable, but not very helpful when approached. If you are very conservative in your faith, definitely do not take him, as he believes that much of the bible didn't actually happen. I will not be recommending him to anyone.

Brilliant guy. Loves evidence. Really funny, to be honest. But EXTREMELY tough class. Don't be fooled. I was a valedictorian in high school and I ended up with a B+ in the course. If you want an A, you'd better be a history major or bust your butt every single second.

You either love or you hate him. His class is memorization based- there is no history without dates. Papers must match his views to the T or you don't get a good grade. Lets just say, I'd never take another class with him.
