Comment:
Loved this class. The material is great by default, but it's made better when this engaging prof teaches it. There was a group project (short film) that put some logistical strains on students, but he was expecting participation and attempts at film technique, not masterpieces, thus making it easy. Papers/reviews were simple. Highly Recommended

DON'T EVER TAKE THIS PROF! worst prof I have ever come across. His grading and feedback are both terrible. sometimes I wonder if he even reads and understands what he's marking. He won't give you that 'A' no matter how hard you try to work for it. He has a book but his syllabus includes no assigned readings yet expects you to read it.

Amazing professor, great man that cares for his students. I mean he comes off a bit eccentric at first but he's the best professor I've ever had. He's lenient when it comes to assignment deadlines. He does ramble sometimes but that's what makes him unique and the best. I absolutely recommend him.

It is difficult to describe this course as anything but a failure. Nichol is a good guy, yes, keeps decent office hours, fair-ish on overdo assignments. The grading is ABSOLUTELY all over the place. You don't need the Gaskell book. You don't need to go to class. The Lectures MAKE NO SENSE. Ramblings.

Don Nichol, gives clear and constructive feedback. If you attend class regularly you will get more out of the course. What makes the classes even more interesting is that he talks about the social context surrounding a text. He is genuinely interested in students as contributors to class, not as an inactive dummies in a seat being talked at.

Some find Don dry or capable of rambling, and he is both at times. However, he is extremely knowledgeable and lives/breathes book and print culture. Likes to go off on semi-related tangents, but listen and you'll actually learn things. Contrary to others, he is not a hard marker; very generous.

Intelligent, funny, and passionate man who clearly enjoys what he does but I would not recommend taking his classes. Lectures are long and boring. No focus, very scattered. Rambles, never feel like I've learned anything. Does not prepare you for any tests or quizzes. I never know what to study or expect. Too hard a marker based on how he teaches.

I adore him. He's kind, helpful, genuine, and wears funky colored glasses. If you go to class, speak up, and do the work that is assigned, you'll be fine. He obviously love what he does and makes his classes interesting. If you're interested in English Lit, you will get along just fine.

I have serious doubts in this profs teaching abilities. There's no doubting his passion for film, but he terribly relays any educational substance to students. He's horribly unclear on what he expects in papers and is extraordinarily unhelpful & hard to approach. Film choices are his own, are boring, & there are way too many films for this course.

Avoid. Seems to be a fair grader when it comes to papers, but unclear about test content, and made 5 mistakes on one test alone. Got students to grade each other's tests with their names still on them and you can never tell when he's going to explode and FREAK out at someone. Only talks about himself or irrelevant topics the whole class.

Worst prof. i've ever had. Had a test and did not explain whatsoever what was on it and as a result the class did poorly. We ended up finding out 3/20 of the answers he had been wrong. Very scatter brained and goes off topic. Singles students out in front of class if they leave early (without even knowing why they're leaving). terrible prof.

This guy is actually the worst. I am doing okay in the class but he gives no guidance to his students at all and he freaks out about stupid things like cell phones and leaving classes. Stay away from this guy if you want to enjoy your classes.

Had Don for ENGL 2000, 3001, 4040, and 4041. He's not a great teacher. Lots of passion for his subject, but gets lost in that and an inability to translate that passion to students. But he's a man who appreciates creativity. He loves applied knowledge. Not pretentious. Weirdly odd, but amusing.

Don Nichol is a wonderful professor. Initially, I was reluctant to take a course with him. He seemed quite intimidating. Once I got to know him my opinion completely changed. Though sometimes the assignments were unclear, he gave great constructive criticism. I would definitely take another course with him!

Great guy. His lectures are stimulating, though he likes to digress quite a bit. His classes always feel casual, that's a plus. His texts are also excellent. Definitely recommended.

Don is excellent! He lectures mostly on the historical and cultural contexts of the texts in question, which I found enlightening. He has a great sense of humour and keeps class engaging and interesting. He's also very fair - not excessive in his demands, and extremely helpful if you need guidance on anything. Best professor I had this semester.

Comment:
Dr. Nichol is simply the best. If you can get to know him, do so. He brings an incredible amount of enthusiasm and intellect to his lectures. He teaches outside the book: less textual, and more on the literary, social and historical significance of a piece of work. Mostly, Dr. Nichol is a great person who cares deeply about his students' progress.
