I have mixed feelings about her. Some days she was kind and helpful, other days she would humiliate you in front of the class and tell you to "go back to Spanish 101" It is nearly impossible to get an A. This was the only class I cried about this semester. Because of Covid, we had to use LockDown Browser which was the most stressful thing ever.

Class is entirely in Spanish. Three very short online assignments MWF. Quiz every/every other Friday. Quizzes on grammer/conjugation, tests on that + vocab & culture. If you can understand conversation in Spanish then its easy. Class is just going over grammar and mostly quizzing the class for whole period.

Shes always complains about students not participating enough even when you think everyone did. Assigns deadlines on Friday Nights... You do need your book & use dictionary when writing papers. Shes likes to call out on students so be prepared.

If you're rusty on your Spanish, make sure you study before you get into this class! Its topic is conversation so all you do is talk. There is a lot of homework and vocab to learn but it's manageable. We watched three films throughout the course and discusses them as well. Portocarrero is really understanding and she cares about her students!

She's a very nice person, not my style teacher. Would not take another class with her. She gives arbitrarily gives 50% on homeworks with no feedback, gives no partial credit on exams and you will not get the participation points for just showing up. When we did well on an exam, she told the class she'd make the next one harder.

Dr. Portocarrero is an amazing professor! She wants to make the most out of every class period and gives awesome feedback on all the writing assignments. Shell help your writing improve, but she speaks in english 50% of the time so your speaking/listening skills wont improve. Overall a pretty easy class as long as you do all of the homework.

Dr. Portocarrero is amazing. I felt like I learned a lot from this class because the course work was not tedious at all. The only homework we had throughout the semester was to watch movies around every other weekend and a few recordings/presentations scattered throughout. She is very understanding and caring and always makes class interesting.

At first, I was terrified of Melvy and found her accent a little difficult to understand. She really grows on you, though. She is more than willing to help you and gives feedback on ALL writing assignments. She love participation. I learned sooo much from her class. She is such a fun and engaging teacher with a great sense of humor.

Love Portocarrero. Definitely my favorite professor in the Spanish department. Ended up dropping my Spanish major in the end, but I would definitely take another class with her. Probably would have stuck with the major if she was the only person I had to take. Show up, participate, work hard and she'll grade you fairly. 10/10 would take again.

Portocarrero is, simply put, the bomb. She creates an environment that is fun yet still informative, and is always willing to clarify and adjust to your needs. She does expect effort though, so don't slack off.

She is pretty interesting a funny I think. Learning foreign languages is not that easy for me. She is very nice and personable. On her tests and assignments she does expect a lot. You cannot get away with bare min for any of your assignments.

Majority of the grade comes from participation, so it's important to speak up in class. Tests are oral, which actually ended up being easier than written. I took four years of spanish in high school and took this class as a freshman and had no real difficulty, so if you're confident in your abilities I highly recommend this class- Melvy is awesome!

SO FREAKING HARD. I had to retake this one. She never explained ANYTHING in this class and it was completely independent. No tests, 85% of the grade rides on 5 papers. RIDICULOUS. Courtad or Kessler allllll the way.

LOVE MELVY SO MUCH! She is awesome once you get to know her, but that doesn't mean you'll get cookie points. She's a tough grader but very fair. If there is no participation in class say your prayers and expect to get blasted out of the room.

Overall a pretty good teacher. In the beginning she is really intimidating and can be a little "mean" sometimes, but she was really good at explaining the material and the tests are pretty legit.

I have had Melvy for both 304 and 341 and she has truly been one of the most intelligent/influential professors I have ever had. Understand that she gets easily frustrated with people who put forth minimal effort; it is important to go to class and show her you are willing to learn. Melvy is a great professor, and knows whats shes talking about!

Horrible teacher! If you are of the male gender, good luck. All but one of the guys in my class dropped, including myself. I went in for help several times and she was completely useless. No matter how much I studied or how much extra work I did, she wouldn't give me better than a D. Hope she likes you and be prepared to work...

I really don't believe she is a good teacher at all. I took my paper in to her office a few times and she helped me "revise" it, yet somehow I came out with a D on the paper. Hmmmm some help she was!
