Comment:
I usually don't trust reviews written on rate my professor, but this time I wish I had before registering from Pinson's class. She expects the students to basically teach the class to each other and then gives you grades with pretty much no feedback. If you reach out to her wanting to improve on your writing, she'll never respond to your email.

Phenomenal teacher! Very laid back; and although my experience greatly contrasts with the others, I always felt she encouraged independent thought and was very open to new ideas (which is necessary for such a course that centers on creative writing). Overall, she is a great departure from the more high-strung, militant English professors at W&M.

Completely unorganized. Had better conversations about the material outside of class than we did inside of it. While the material she selects is interesting, her lectures about the subjects were all over the place. The class itself is pretty damn easy, just zone out during class and keep up with the material and you should be fine.

Comment:
This class was okay based material but the workshop was such a let down. Her grading is arbitrary and subjective which is completely insane based on the fact most of the work is based of your creativity. I did extra work outside of class and never missed a single class to be sure I secured my A, but only then to be slapped in the face in the end

Highly disorganized, with a narrow preference in subject. Actively discouraged more fantastical topics in favor of more grounded stories. Spacey and slow to work with, and incredibly disorganized.

The most unorganized professor. Don't let anyone talk you into taking this class, you will regret it. She will lose your papers, she won't stick to the syllabus, she will send you 3 emails a day, and she will act like you have no classes other than hers. DON'T DO IT.

Professor Pinson is spacey and disorganized. If you can't handle that, definitely don't take her class. Takes forever to reply to emails and forgets what she did or didn't assign. Her class was sometimes interesting though and it was not hard to do well in. Don't take if you hate group projects.

Comment:
Spacey and disorganized; misplaced important documents and even student papers. The midterm was too long; the final was more reasonable. Fairly easy on papers, but her criteria are vague and hard to figure out. She's nice and cares about her subject/students, but she wasted class time and failed to engage. I spent class counting down the minutes.

Comment:
Took her for Creative Writing: Poetry, and her spaciness and disorganization were only okay b/c the class wasn't very demanding. If I'd had harder assignments, it probably would have been a lot harder to cope. Her strengths are very helpful in a poetry class, though: she's a great poet. She's picky about certain things, though--annoying at times.

Prof. Pinson is all over the place, but also brilliant. I'm not sure if she was always spacy, or if it's the result of a brain surgery she had some years ago. She's so smart, but will get assignments confused and criticize you for doing what she told you to do in the first place. But like I said, she's also brilliant.

Comment:
Pinson is the spaciest, most disorganized and most incompetent professor I've ever had. She can't keep up with the work she assigns, she drops assignments for half the class when she "runs out of time," though the other half has done it, and her grading criteria are completely random. Don't take unless you have a lot of patience.

I had her in 1996, I believe. She was truly a brilliant Professor. I was one of a few white students but never felt any bad vibe, as some have indicated. She led extremely thought-provoking discussions, and had a deep, nuanced grasp of the material. One of the best professors I ever had, in college or law school.

Pinson may not be the most organized professor you've had or the clearest. But most of the time she gives you the freedom to come to your own conclusion, if you are up to the challenge of doing so. She is a great writer and that is not something we can say about all the profs in the dept. She thinks on her feet and feel out the best way to go.

Spacy doesn't even begin to cover it. One gets the idea that this is what years of hard livin' could do to a person. She always does everything the hardest way possible, and doesn't seem to have any sort of grasp on the material.

OK, so she's a total flake. But, she is a nice person, and she genuinely cares about her subject and her students. She is vague about what she expects from students, but for her this just means all you need to do is good work; she's not picky. Technophobe

Laughably aloof and disorganized. And if she asks you to come to an African bongo party in her backyard for a year-ending party, find an excuse; the "African" musician you'll find there is every bit as much a fraud as Pinson herself.
