The Sectional Controversy and the Civil War, 1848-1877. There used to a t-shirt at the bookstore that said, "I survived Scarborough's Civil War." Had to take this class twice to get the D off my transcript. Tests are essay, required flanking movements and times in each battle NO STUDY GUIDES!!! + 1500 pages of OUTSIDE reaing. Hardest class ever!

After having Scarborough for three classes, I finally was able to understand exactly how to handle his class. Yes, he gives lots of notes. Yes, you should be doing lots of reading.Scarborough has single handedly provided my most memorable academic experiences at Southern Miss and the University will be the less when he retires.I'm high on him!

Great teacher! Really hard, but fair. Gives extra credit for attendance and very funny. He's helpful, but studying is a must.

One of the best professors I have ever had, at any level. If you don't want to work for a grade, don't waste his time, take someone who expects you to be a brainless automon. He's tough, but if you earn his respect you can make it any course.

Great teacher. Good notes and good studying required. Kind of cute in that grandfather way. Be sure to read the assigned book. He has a wry to sarcastic sense of humor. I did great in his class, but it required hard work.

This man is a legend in the field of Southern history. If one says he's too hard, I'd consider the student in question to be of marginal intelligence.

He is definately a hard teacher. I don't recommend him to anyone who doesn't have previous knowledge of early US history. Although he is hard, he offers a challenge, and he actually teaches the HISTORY, not just the facts. He gives hard tests, long notes to study for even a 15 minute quiz. But he is full of knowledge. Very funny at times.

OLD SCHOOL is the only way you can describe Scarborough. He's un-PC, unrepentent and very knowledgeable (with dozens of repetitious catch-phrases). Just don't come to class with your feelings on your shoulder. One of a dying breed of professor.

An institution at USM and an incredible asset to the University. He is fascinating, extraordinarily knowledgeable, and frequently hilarious. His unabashedly individualistic thought is damn refreshing, as is his fearless criticism of administration. He is also very helpful if you try and care.

Dr. Scarborough is a tough professor. I had As in both 101 and 102, and he handed my first B in a history class. Nevertheless, he is an excellent scholar and knows His Civil War front to back. He does give a lot of notes, but that is common for guys his age. Still, he's a damn good professor
