This topic is super difficult and he doesn't explain it very well. Luckily the answers to all the homeworks are in his powerpoints and the exams are open note.

If you want to get involved in ML research with a passionate and knowledgeable professor, Li Liao is the guy in CIS dept. I have heard this from academically strong classmates whose advice I take seriously. They mention some interactions with the professor that makes me think "gosh, I should have at least talked to him", now its late!

He is always available to help; has the sleep schedule of a college student for those late night answers. Language barrier aside, he goes through the basics of everything really fast. Take the time to read/skim the book in order to understand what he skipps over.

I had Liao for Algorithms. He's extremely passionate about the material, and teaches it really well. His homeworks can be very difficult though, so always start them really early.

Li is a great professor. It takes a few classes to get used to his accent but it's not that bad. Assignments can be challenging but if you start them early and go to office hours they're manageable. He gives you practice exams which are very similar to the actual ones, and he has a genuine passion for the subject. I highly recommend him.

Had him for 260 and for 320 again. Simply terrible. It is sad because it seems like he enjoys teaching. However in the mindnumbing 75 minutes it takes for him to fail at explaining concepts which should be EXTREMELY interesting, I could sit down with my friends and learn everything he went over in 15 minutes. He's just is not cut out for teaching.

The homework/exams are not that difficult as long as you attend class. The topics are very interesting and enjoyable. Liao is incredibly knowledgeable and could talk for days on end about machine organization and assembly which makes the class even better. Liao also presents a few nerdy CISC jokes which make the class surpass all expectations.

He is very smart but very unclear. His way of teaching is boring and hard to follow. If you try and do some simple assembly programming and get the basics you will do OK. He curves the final grade.

Its not just his accent, but the way he structures the course. The slides are not intuitive at all and he fails to motivate the class. He should go over assigned homeworks to the class.Students have a tough itme with his homeworks

This professor has no clue how to properly convey the material for the class. He is unclear, and frequently answers a question, only to contradict himself later. Homeworks are easy once you figure out what they (and by extention he) are talking about. Avoid if you would like a good class...

A strong Chinese accent, which lends to some very funny misinterpretations of terms. Difficult tests, difficult homeworks, and difficult to pay attention in class. Kind of helpful outside of class. Luckily, he curves.
