Don't purchase the book used for homework! There is a free pdf online. Gawron seems nice, but isn't very accessible outside class and his teaching style for this course left most of us on our own with tests/assignments.

Syntax is a hard subject! Thankfully, Gawron grades homework based on completion, as it is a large part of your grade. He explains how he wants controversial problems done in class. The midterm and final are take home, and he posts the previous year's ahead of time so you can try the problems and get clarification beforehand. Def read the textbook!

Class discussions were really interesting. Pragmatics seemed to permeate into everything else I was doing that semester. Because of his course, I am now constantly engaged in analyzing discourse and its context. Some of the most challenging and theoretical reading I've done in my master's program, however. Dr. Gawron has the knowledge and the humor

Syntax with Gawron is awesome, especially if you pay attention and catch the stupid, corny jokes he often makes. Reading every week helps tremendously. As does going to class - it's essential. Gawron makes a hard subject interesting and if you do the work, you'll pass the class. He's easy to talk to as well, so ask away!

This class was NOT easy. But the ideas, algorithms, and python code you can gain from Gawron and Ling581 can help turn you into a real Pro in Computational Linguistics. I took this class as a guy off the street (Open University) and applied the material presented in class directly to my work as a Data Analyst at a Software Company here in SD.

Gawron is a nice guy and a good professor. He will go over everything his students ask him about. Sometimes he's confusing but if there are any questions he'll answer them all day. All tests are open note and book which is nice, but you probably won't pass if you don't study too. (Sidenote-his handwriting is TERRIBLE.)

Gawron is an amazing professor for syntax. He will do as much as possible to help everyone understand the complexities of syntax and its multiple theories. He gives very clear examples of what he expects to see on the midterm and final. Go to every lecture-take good notes and listen to the many hints!

Gawron is probably the best college professor I have ever had! He is a really good teacher, and given the difficulty of the material, he is super clear. Plus, he's written some pretty awesome science fiction novels.

Dr. Gawron really wants you to understand syntax! As a graduate student taking this course, I appreciate his style. His expectations were clear, he gave tons of reference material, and kindly walked students through EVERY question they asked. He just had a class full of lazy undergrads, which made the repetition of the course painfully boring!

Doesn't answer questions. Tons of work. Picky grader, seems really disconnected. A hard, narrow course taught by a guy who doesn't seem to really care that much. No fun.

Great computational linguistics/computer science and linguistics professor. I've had him for many undergrad and grad classes, and I always learn a lot in his classes. He is also super helpful during office hours, so, become this guy's friend if you're taking a course with him!

I just completed Ling 522 and WOW!! What a hard class. Linguistics has always been my passion, I have excelled in every aspect of it, until this class. Not only is this class difficult but the professor does not show enough examples to help you get through homework and exams. All exams are take home. Hard grader!!!!

Dr. Gawron is a pretty chill guy. He isn't a jerk, just really laidback and easygoing - he's also a science fiction novelist. Syntax is a difficult subject, but he tries to deliver. Go to class if you want to clear up homework questions and attend lecture - it's only once a week. Easy grader, curves exams (which are take-home).

If you can avoid taking him, DO IT!! He is NOT helpful at all, and does not explain the subject at all. He expects the students to already know the subject. Homework and take home tests are graded very closely, all of the t's must be crossed and the i's dotted or else he will take points off.

Relatively good professor. Lectures tend to be quite boring unless you are really interested in the stuff. Gave 2 Take home Exams. Roughly 10 assignments of medium difficulty. Gives partial credit on everything. Not much programming except for the last 2 assignments. Easier than most CS electives.

For sure this class was not the easiest general ed to take, the subject itself is so unrelated to almost anything else you could possibly study. Despite this, all you have to do to get an A is come to class, show interest, and do the weekly assignments. The midterm and final are open book and open note- just don't get lazy.

One of the hardest classes I ever took. You really have to stay on top of the material. Homework every week (takes a few hours). Confusing lectures. Won't give full credit for getting all the right answers. You have to "impress" him, which is next to impossible. Nice guy but I would take someone else if you can.

If you are not a grad student, you will not do well. Everyone in the class has had a million linguistics courses, and will talk about stuff that is irrelevant and confusing. Go to every class and if you're lucky, you will get a C.
