She gave us a final exam with five essay questions, in addition to a short answer portion that was taken later, that made it hard for me to study for any of my other exams. I liked the portion of the class before, but her exams are unnecessarily stressful in a way that actively keeps me from learning.

Susan is a teacher who has very high expectations, and the result is that you truly know where you stand with the information. If you slack, you won't pass. This class was so much fun! This is her favorite class to teach and it shows. She's stern and her tests are hard to motivate you to learn the material, but she always gives extra credit.

I had to take her class online but I felt like she was super accomodating and the class was not bad at all. She gives you everything you need to know and as long as you take the practice quizzes and review the study guides she gives you for practice, you should be fine. Lectures weren't mandatory but the review lectures were extremely helpful!

Dr. Hengeveld was very accesible outside of class and her office hours helped a lot. I liked that we had in person discussions so I could get more help if needed. To pass this class I had to read and take notes from the online book, and I had to fill out every study guide available because biology does not come easy to me. Needless to say, I passed

Comment:
Dr. Hengeveld was an incredibly rude and off-putting professor. She blamed any and all technological problems on her students even after UITS had said that the issues were her fault. In addition she was not clear at all about what expectations for the course were. I have never seen a professor care so little about their students and be so mean.

Really great professor, it was a fun class to take but you have to be ready to put in some work. I found that meeting with her in office hours really saved me, she really takes time to make sure you understand as long as you put forth the effort. I would highly recommend her!

Dr. Hengeveld is a decent professor, just not the best at explaining things. The class itself isn't too difficult, and she gives plenty of room to get good grades. She dropped our lowest quiz, test, and 2 lowest assignments. Just show up and pay attention and you'll be fine.

I genuinely enjoyed this class. The field trips are early, but I had more fun than I thought I would. The exams are very long but doable. Be prepared to memorize a decent amount of taxonomy. Overall, Susan is great. She can be a tough grader but she gives you plenty of opportunities to ask questions and she's very easy to approach. Awesome class!

Dr. Hengeveld takes attendance in a 250 person lecture, and gets extremely upset when you go to leave even a minute early. She on multiple occasions came into the next class with a lecture about our 'behavior'. Her lectures are just fill in the blank ppts, and the exams are unnecessarily hard. I took this course after HL bio courses, and struggled

She teaches in a very specific way. Its very black and white with not a lot of grey area, which is how I like being taught. Shes known for tough questions on her test but if you are prepared you should have no issues. Dont feel scared to ask questions, she loves answering them.

While some people may see she is tough and course, I find her endearing and open-minded. She puts everything you need to know plus some in accessible places and wants you to pass. She offers help frequently and is always willing to answer any silly questions myself or others may have.

God, she's literally the worst professor I've ever had. She's extremely cocky and flies through lecture slides. Please do yourself a favor and not take this class with her.

Horrible. Treats students like they're stupid. Extremely cocky, told us to not even fill out the course evals because she thinks IU loves her too much to get rid of her. Definitely don't recommend taking this class with her. (BIOL-111)

She was very passionate about her work and she made me more excited to pursue animal behavior. She was stern at a times which is just part of her personality. However, you get extra credit for attendance, you can drop an exam and replace it with your final grade, and one quiz is dropped so there are a lot of opportunities to raise your grade.

Dr. Hengeveld is brilliant, however her lectures move very quickly and can be hard to follow. The tests are novels and on top of being difficult, they take every bit of the allotted time to finish. She does drop lowest scores and the activities done in discussion help understand the material a lot, but overall the course was unenjoyable.

Hengeveld is the best choice for BIOL-L111. Her tests contain some lengthy and confusing questions. You can drop a quiz and can replace lowest test grade with final exam grade. Some complain about her and her teaching style but she is very fair and straightforward with what is expected. Gives extra credit for good attendance

Very helpful professor gives extra credit and assignments other than tests to boost grade. This is a challenging course so you will need to study but she gives study guides so I never even used the textbook. She also drops your lowest quiz and lets you drop a test if you do better on the final than your lowest test score. Overall recommend

Dr. Hengeveld is VERY knowledgable on biology. Demanding class - tests require a lot of studying to get a good grade, attendance is important (she talks though powerpoint slides), grades hard and very specifically. Not a terrible professor - just requires a lot work and time with studying. Supposed to read textbook but don't necessarily HAVE TO.

Tips: Do the reading and take notes. Before tests, reread notes and underline the most important things. Attend every lecture. Mastering bio wasn't very helpful; you can use quizlets to check answers before submitting. PACE YOURSELF; quizzes require detailed answers and test questions are usually full paragraphs to read; don't run out of time.

Attendance is key, *especially* at discussion group. Those one-point Top Hat assignments stack up quickly. Not much wiggle room with Dr. Hengeveld. She's pretty no-nonsense and doesn't take BS excuses.
